A deep dark Czech style lager. Roasted and caramelised malts give chocolate and coffee flavours and a lasting cappuccino-style collar of foam.

7th December 2011
Cask at Pigs Ear. Opaque black beer, tiny tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry. Mild dark malts. A little licorice spice. Trace of candy fruits underneath. Dry finish. Allright but could be a bit crisper.

Draft at Zerodegrees. The name doesn’t tell the full story.. It’s like a nice light porter. Dark pour with a beige head, and coffee in aroma and flavour. Good beer, and the best I tried in the brewpub that day.

Cask@Pigs Ear Beer Festival 2011. Deep amber colour, small brown head. Aroma is spices, mild roasted malts along with some slight gluelike sweetness. Flavour is quite much a German Schwarzbier, but has some more herbal and earthy notes.

Tap at the London Brewers Showcase. Pours cloudy brown with a moderate, off-white head. Sweet, malty aroma with hints of coffee. Pleasant flavor with lightly roasted malts and subtle cocoa. Medium bodied with crisp carbonation. Finishes well balanced with sweet, modestly dark malts and some light bitterness. Very good. (3.8)

Keg at the brewpub, London. Pours dark brown witha creamy, tan head. Burnt toasty bread nose. Light to medium sweet flavor with rich chocolate, toasty brown bread, light roast. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Light sweet finish with mild roast, pleasant cocoa, light minerals, faint earthy bitterness. Great stuff, wonderful balance. I think they’ve really nailed the style. (3.9)

[On tap at ZeroDegrees Reading] 13/5/2008: Chocolate, fading into fruitiness. More like a dark ale than a black lager. Little bitterness in aftertaste, quite pleasant, but not particularly memorable. Probably the best of the ZeroDegrees range. Re-rate 22/10/2008: Better than I remember; nice and smokey, with hints of coffee as well as the aforementioned chocolate. Definitely the best of the Zerodegrees range so far. Have increased ratings accordingly.

On tap at the Bristol branch of Zerodegrees. Dark chocolate brown with a slight tan head. Aroma of dark fruits and plain chocolate. Flavour of sweet malt with some coffee. Not much of a finish but good overall.
