Black is the night! ans a low tan head to go with it. aroma chocolate and roasted malt, hops also noticeable. Taste chocolate (nothing sweet) to roasted coffee, earthy hops, though I don’t get much ginger. Dry coffee lasting aftertaste. Creamy med+ body.

Bottle from Beers Of Europe [170115]
Black, large frothy tan head, good lacing
Aroma of roasted malts, some roast coffee, soft spicy, slight savoury notes, slight hint of smoke, dab of dark bitter chocolate
Taste of dark malts, plain chocolate, getting a touch of ginger, touch of dark fruit, really tasty dark malts, fairly complex flavour
Palate - soft carb, medium body, soft sweet, smooth, good body. Finish of smooth dark malts, some dark bitter chocolate
Overall - On cask this is better. Always liked this, surprised I haven’t rated this. The spicy ginger works well here as it is subtle. One of their best beers.

Bottle. Black colour, small brown head, very good lacing. Nose is very intensive dark chocolate and coffee. Mouth is quite gentle, not too roasty, dominated by intensive liquorice. Light sweetness, light bitterness. Light carbonation, medium body. Not bad, but not the kind of porter I like.

Poured from 500mL bottle (best before June 2015). Nearly black with full tan head. Aroma of light chocolate, soy sauce, and vegetable. Taste starts sweet malty lactose with mild licorice and a very subtle ginger undertone and noticeably becomes roast coffee with chocolate notes following the finish. The balance is quite nice and there’s some subtle complexities hidden in there, but it’s a wee bit on the thin side in terms of body for a porter.

Bottle from the Blue Glass, Bedford, consumed at home. Dark chocolate brown, small tan head. A reasonable amount of carbonation. Liquorice and fresh espresso dominate the nose. Gorgeous taste: sweet and spicy ginger with a long slightly bitter coffee-laden finish. Satisfying bittersweet aftertaste. Wonderful in it’s simplicity and balance. I do not normally think much of ginger beers, but it works very well in this recipe. Thumbs up to a fantastic brew.
