Kasteel Donker is a member of the Belgian quadrupel family. These are strong dark brown beers where the roasted malt predominates. The very first beer of the Kasteel range is a full-mouthed beer with hints of caramel, coffee and chocolate. The sweet initial taste makes this beer surprisingly complex but very accessible.

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of yeast, toasted malt, dried fruit, wheat and banana. Pours hazy dark brown color with thin creamy tan-like head, great lacing and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with sweet and rich toasted malt and caramel, following is yeasty, medicinal, fruity and alcoholic, mouthfeel is spicy and warming, while finish is mild bitter. Full body, thick creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Good one, but so damned strong and sweet that is really hard to drink...

Fles thuis geprobeerd. Het is een helder donkerbruin bier met een dun schuim. Het aroma is moutig en iets fruitig. De smaak is gebrande mout, rijp fruit en zoethout.

Pours auburn from the bottle. The off white head fizzes and soon exits. Aroma full of toffee, cherry more reminiscent of dr pepper than actual cherry. Sweet, full of cherry syrup, licorice, caramel. Sticky, medium-bodied, prickly carbonation. The alcohol stays well hidden. Quite sweet but still pretty good.

Sample from a shared bottle. Pours a nice, clear, dark, ruby-brown color, with a small, tan head. The aroma is sweet cherries, dust, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Very sweet flavor, with no bitterness or tartness. Medium body, with an effervescent, malty mouthfeel. This is a nice, enjoyable, very sweet beer. Could be more nuanced and balanced.
