Corne du diable (French for "Horn of the devil") is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English India Pale Ale. This new style, born on the west coast of North America, is characterized by stronger and hoppier beers. The result is a red ale expressing caramel flavours coming from the malt, sharp bitterness and powerful hop aromas, thanks to dry hopping.

Bottle. Nice creamy head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste are rich hops, flowers, caramel and sugar. Nicely balanced.

Blanchard’s, Allston 11.5oz ($5): Beautiful beige head that lingers over the hazy, slightly orange brownish body. Deep complex aroma which in equal measure advertises its sugary malt and hop characters. Front is more fruity than hoppy, but good amount of hops appears by the finish giving the beer a bitter sensation. Compared to Sierra Nevada Celebration or Green Flash IPA, this IPA is barely hoppy at all. But, there is more to the style than just hops and this beer captures the full range of flavor complexity possible in an IPA (ok, that was a bit of a hyperbole). The caramel malts that add a subtle sweetness and the fruity notes make this beer a keeper.

Pours dark amber red with a large white lasting head.Nose shows typical American pine and resin in massive amounts. Grapefruit and grassy hints in the background but not overly complex. Quite a lot of sweet crystal malt as well.Similarly resinous flavours, along with more pine. Crystal malt is definitely not forgotten along with some toasty, nutty notes. No chance of it competing with the aggressive, massive bitterness. A bit unbalanced.Nice low carbonation, good rich body.

Bottle. A rather malty IPA. Pours opaque amber with a medium, light tan head. Nose gives off a fair amount of citrus and pine hop notes, along with distinct caramel malts. Flavor holds a similar, balanced profile. Up front the malts dominate - caramel , some spices, honey - then morphs into the IPA, with orange and resiney pine, along with some apple and lemon. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Very nice overall. A departure from the American IPAs to which I am accustomed.

Bottle, 13C. Amber, fading beige head. Hoppy aroma with as much earth as citrus and woody pine. Caramel and nuts are there too. Taste is as much about mildly sweet malt complexity as it is about hops. Finish has long citrus and earthy bitterness. Seems like a half-way-house between US and UK IPAs, but never seems like a compromise. [4]Bottle. Dark amber with a light beige head. Aroma of toffee, earthy hops, tea, some citrus and pine. Finishes dry, but there’s quite fat toffee and a sweet tea-like note there beforehand. Bitter and woody at the end. Interesting and complex malt side, but liked it rather less this time.

Another very good American style IPA from an excellent brewery. It pours a light amber-brown, like a darkly wet brick in the shade. The aroma is nice and thick with hops, a middling citric-pine aroma. The flavor is similar but a smidgen less sweet and pure. There’s a healthy caramel malt backbone to prop up the hop party. Feel and drinkability are both good.

Bottle thanks to beerbill. Pours with a hazy amber body with a large, off-white head and some strong spider lacing. Aroma of caramel, light peppery hops and some tea notes. Taste is sweet malt and some faded hops. Creamy and caramel laden finish. Medium bubbles.

On tap on 07/14/2011. Hazy dark amber body with a large creamy white head. Sweet caramel and bread aroma. Sweet spice bread and yeast flavor. Medium body moderate carbonation. 7/3/7/3/15 3.5 Bottle on 10/27/2009. Clear copper amber body with a large rocky off-white head. Sweet floral and slightly woody hop aroma on a caramel background.
