Corne du diable (French for "Horn of the devil") is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English India Pale Ale. This new style, born on the west coast of North America, is characterized by stronger and hoppier beers. The result is a red ale expressing caramel flavours coming from the malt, sharp bitterness and powerful hop aromas, thanks to dry hopping.

Bottle from Bottledog in London at home. Dark copper pour with minimal but sticky head. Aroma is very red ale - sweet maltiness but with spicy and then floral hops. Taste is a bit unusual - very deeply bitter but balanced by red ale-esque ("copper"-tasting) maltiness. Very malty, actually. Palate is normal with a strongish carbonation. Dry, slightly sweet finish. Solid but not great.

Keg at BD Camden, 30/09/14. Rich amber with a well appointed beige covering that retains. Nose is caramel malt, blood orange, grapefruit, pine, light spice. Taste is caramel malt forward, piney lickings, candied fruit peel, bitter orange wash, grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid malt driven IPA with a good pine bite.

Bottle at the Red Squirrel. Appearance - amber with a decent head. Nose - biscuits and toffee just a touch of lime. Some spice and earthiness and even a root vegetable thing. Taste - lemon and biscuits up front then they come together at the end in good balance like a key lime pie. Palate - medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - I like this because of the layers of different things going on. It’s not just a citrus bomb.

On tap at the brewpub. A redish copper pour with a herbal orange hop bouquet. The taste is a very malty bitter piney caramel with a bit of a woodsy quality. It is a good but simple IPA.

Swietne dekadenckie piwo.

341ml bottle from Saveur-Biere
Bottled ??/2013 (?) - Pours dark amber with a small white head. Aroma of sweet caramely malts, syrup, fruity hops, grass and citrus. Taste is malty, sweetish and fruity with some citrus, grass and toffee notes. Finish is sweet, malty and mildly fruity. Okay, quite malty English IPA.
