Corne du diable (French for "Horn of the devil") is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English India Pale Ale. This new style, born on the west coast of North America, is characterized by stronger and hoppier beers. The result is a red ale expressing caramel flavours coming from the malt, sharp bitterness and powerful hop aromas, thanks to dry hopping.

Keg at National Beer Hall, Calgary. It pours cloudy amber, with a small white head. The nose is pine, caramel malt, citrus peel, somewhat perfumed, marmalade and some light toffee. The taste is caramel, spice, brown bread, citrus peel, tangy marmalade, resinous hops and pine with a dry slightly botter finish. A malt forward IPA for sure, but thankfully it has a generous hop content. Good balance, flavour and body.

Bottle @ The Rover. Pours tiny hazy amber with a small frothy offwhite head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, wood, pine, orange zest, bread, resin, toffee, slightly dry grass and hints of cereal. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with pine, bread, orange peal, grass, grapefruit juice, caramel, wood, roasted oat flakes, resin, plums, dark grapes, overripe lemons, toffee and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, slightly oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with pine, grass, caramel, orange peal and resinous wood. Bottle was slightly past its prime and sadly it shines through in the smell and taste. Will rerate once I have a fresh bottle but even this slightly old beer is still solid.

En glad överraskning. En kraftig, karamellig och fruktig IPA, väl avvägd mellan sötma och beska.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy copper-amber with a medium tan head that dissipates quickly with good lacing. Strong toasted malt aroma, plus almost floral hop notes. Taste is slightly sweet, caramel malt plus strong bitter hops, citrus and pine. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Definitely a maltier brew than your typical west coast IPA, but still a strong hops presence and a very satisfying pour.

34,1 cl bottle @ O’Hara’s Freehouse. Rated on 24.02.2011
Aroma is sweet with caramel, resin and some hops. Flavour is also sweet with resin, toffee, caramel and hints of nuts. Probably too old bottle as the hops have turned into sweetness.
