Corne du diable (French for "Horn of the devil") is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English India Pale Ale. This new style, born on the west coast of North America, is characterized by stronger and hoppier beers. The result is a red ale expressing caramel flavours coming from the malt, sharp bitterness and powerful hop aromas, thanks to dry hopping.

341mL bottle from LCBO. Poured cool, a deep hazy amber with 2cm of fluffy tan head that left lots of lacing. Aroma is herbal, spicy hops with caramel malts and some pleasant fruitiness compared to many IPAs. On draft I seem to remember this being more citrusy. Flavour is dominated by grainy caramel malts, piney hops and bit of yeast. Finish is dried down by acidic, citrus hops and roasty malts. Very well-balanced beer, more malt-driven than many IPAs but good stuff. Need to re-rate on draft.

02/01/2012 Ma che siete venuti a fà (tap). Ambrata, mielosa, intensa, limpida, schiuma bianco sporca, abbondante e persistente. Aroma leggermente fruttato, malto, caramello e spezie. In bocca è molto amara, con un luppolo potente deciso, di carattere (che si stempera però sorso dopo sorso) e con note di malto evidenti. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Una bella IPA.

Great IPA. Strong bitter herbs that stayed around to interfere with the first half of the next beer I drank. Well done

11.5oz bottle from Pinch poured into a shaker. First off, this is a twist-off bottle? Wasn’t expecting that. Pours a cloudy nut brown with a half finger of off-white head. Aroma of citrus hops and some sweet caramel malt. Taste is medium-heavy bitter. Starts with piney hops and ends with some nice grapefruit notes. Very slight caramel malt. Medium bodied with a thick yet slick texture. Lively carbonation and a very long, bitter finish. Overall, very good. Something I would gladly drink again in the future.

Tap @ Beer Temple. Red brown color (pretty dark for an IPA). Off white head, good lacing. Citrussy aroma’s, resin, along with malty sweetness and a hint of acidity. Flavor is mildly sweet and mildly bitter. Quite full bodied. Finishes nice ’n’ bitter. Good!

Beer No. 90 on my tour through Austria, Germany and Denmark.
On tap at Mikkeller bar, Copenhagen. Courtesy of and shared with Papsoe (thanks a lot!) Light hazy amber coloured, medium sized creamy pale beige head, citrusy hoppy nose. Quite sweet and hoppy with a bit too fruity (peaches and grapefruit) taste. Moderate dry bitter hoppy finish.

Bottle at City Pub,Goteberg. Clear amber brown pour with a tan head. Aroma of grassy hops, caramel and malt. Flavour is sweet but with a very bitter bite going long into the finish. Medium bodied and carbonation. Good but could be a little better balanced between the sweet and the bitter.

Little cloudy copper to ruby red beer, creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive with nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very piny, raisins, wood, earthy. MF: good carbon, full body. Taste: fruity start, ripe fruits, bitter hops, grapefruit. Aftertaste: minty, bitter hops, little dry, some citrus. At last an IPA that has some other hops in it.

[9/25/11] Mahleket Hanikot Shotrim ’11 tour. Bottle at Sorbon in Bromma. Deep red color with a medium bubbly white head. Aroma of piney and grapefruity hops and a bit of caramelly malty notes. Bitter hoppy flavor with pine needles and citrus, light resinous notes and a bit of sweet, chewy, slightly caramelly and cookie-ish malt. Medium-bodied. Nice.

12 ounce bottle, 08-2011 notched in the side. Pours hazy red color with a gigantic foamy off white head that lasts half a century and reduces to a thick lacing cap. Some decent lacing sticks to the glass as well. Tons of carbonation bubbling from the bottom of the glass. Aromas of big caramel, molasses, pine, floral, bread, and lots of spices. Really odd and unique aromas for an IPA, I’m not liking them too much. Taste of big caramel, pine, spices, and a bit of citrus. Nice amount of bitterness on the finish that lingers with lots of pine and spices. Huge amount of carbonation with a big prickly mouthfeel, but this still drinks very smoothly with a medium body. No alcohol noticed in the taste or finish. Overall, a decent IPA. The aromas were really weird, but the taste was pretty good.
