To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewing’s long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

Draught at the Evening Star, Brighton on 3 July 2010. Gold with thin white head. Lightly hoppy, but rather metallic with citric overtone. Slightly disappointing.

Tap @ Beer Temple. Nelson Sauvin hops are really popular these days. And most of the times they make a decent beer out of it. This one fits in the category. Easy going APA.

Sample from bottle at Glunz beer Expo, Apr 5. Shows no bubbles, but a nice thin layer of foam up top, beer itself is clear, almost light as a pilsener. Pretty basic IPA smell (how can it be called an "American Pale Ale" if it uses New Zealand hops?). Very grassy hop taste, just a little bit of supportive malt, lightly toasted, so this is intended as a hop-forward beer. Good for hopheads, though. Goes down nicely. This was originally a one-off beer, but the Anchor rep told me there was such demand for it, it will be coming back into regular rotation.

Cloudy amber with a medium off white head. Hoppy aroma with pine and grapefruits. Flavour had loads of pine, grapefruis, malt and hints of lemons. Finished dry.

On tap at Beer Temple. ABV 6%. Hazy yellow colour, frothy rocky white head. Aroma of grassy and piny hops, some cardboard. Flavour is light malty, a bit sweet, but because the malt body is thin the hops are very dominant in an unpleasant way, very bitter, dry, metallic, a bit of cardboard. Became better after a few sips, but the malt base is too thin.

From tap at SF Beer Week Celebrator Beer News Anniversary Party. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head, lasting with a nice lacing. Smooth hoppy aroma, Nelson Sauvin shines through. Smooth and fruity hops flavoure - very elegant. Dry finish. Nice one. Lovely. Easy.

Tap. Clear golden body. Creamy white head. Grainy, grassy minimal hops...little to no Nelson. Some grape and citrus. Exotic taste, grainy, caramel and a really unique exotic hop.. Thinnish, bitter, grainy. Nice pale.

Draft at the Rubicon. Pours dark gold with a creamy, clingy white head. Nice hoppy aroma. Medium body with mild carbonation. Not lush, but quite floral and bitter. Goes mellow towards the end. Lingering bitter and floral. I like the reference to juicy hops from kmweaver. It’s true.
