Tap at the brewpub. A solid ipa, good hops, some nice citrus and citrus zest. Solid malts to balance. Servicable, nothing to go nuts for but a nice quaff if you are looking for a good ipa.

Keg at Bar Hop. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Faint lacing. Aroma of apricot and hay. Flavour of herbs and waxed lemon. Thin body with a watery, slightly oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Tangy and sharp.

Sampled on draft at the brewpub this beer poured a murky apricot color with a small foamy white head that left great lacing. The aroma was pine and cactus. The flavor was bitter, sour and tart pine, cactus and catbox. Very long finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok.

This is, and it isn’t, a review of Couch Surfer. Why? Because this is a review of Couch Surfer using Indie’s new Randall. What’s a Randall? That was my question at Indie (more specifically, what the hell is that thing?) It’s a "double-chamber filter that you connect to a tap of your favorite beer and fill with flavor-enhancing ingredients." This fella was invented by Dogfish Head and it’s cool. But it bring up a sticky question for rating, is this now a separate beer? The admins tell me no. (Thank you JoeMcPhee) But take this review with a grain of salt, this is not the straight Couch Surfer. So... Draft at Indie. The beer pours a very cloudy blonde with white head. Big hoppy nose of pine and resin, fruit citrus floating in there. Taste similar to nose with big hops pine and resin, bready malts, but less fruit.

(On tap at the brewpub, May 17 2014) Pours a slightly hazy dull dark gold with an average white head, lingered and left lace. Aroma of catty tropical fruit hops, lots of grapefruit pith with pineapple, mango, no real malt on the nose. Flavour leads with tons of grapefruit pith and rind as well, along with tropical fruit and cattiness, very simple and lightly sweet pale malts. Moderate to high bitterness for the malt body, especially in the finish, a little grain on the finish. Quite average body with average to high carb as well. I’d call this an APA as it has very light malt character, but it’s a pretty nice hop-forward beer with a decent profile. Nothing that really made it jump out, but that’s more a comment on the volume of good hoppy beers in Toronto now than anything.
