An ultra-premium all-malt classic English-style India Pale Ale at 6.5% alc./vol. Enticing deep gold colour. Nutty malt aromatic nuances with spicy, grassy and fruity hop aromas achieved by dry hopping. Spicy, grassy and fruity hop flavours are combined with an assertive bitterness and mellow smooth malt flavour. Typical yeast-derived ale fruitiness and warming alcohol make this India Pale Ale a true-to-style classic. Enjoy with mulligatawny soup, roast beef, meat pies and stews, cajun fish, curry dishes and spicy foods, haggis, and strong cheddar and blue cheeses.

A clear, dark amber body topped by a white, thinly laced head. The nose has a touch of fruity sourness, caramel and citrus. As promised, the lead taste elements are malt based - caramel and roasted grain. Hop fruitiness follows, but not too astringent or obnoxiously fruit-juicy like the recent NE IPAs that everyone is making. I'm buyin' what they're sellin' here

6er from the lcbo. Pours a nice amber, with a big white head. Aroma has hints of pine, toasted grains and light caramel. Finish has hints if stone fruit, and grass. The body is bigger than what I’d expect, and the carb is very soft. The beer is kinda muddy, and would benefit from more crispness. It’s not awful, I think people are seeing ipa and expecting a west coast hop bomb, not realizing its an English ipa. Even at that it’s not great, but it’s not awful either.

on tap at C’est What during the 2006 spring beerfest. Ok guys, stick to making wine. Thin, not much hops at all, wattery, forgettable.

Can 473ml (LCBO, canned 11/2018)
Clear amber-copper colour, small steady white head. Rustic grassy, woody, a bit fruity aroma. Medium-bodied. Quite sweet IPA, almost toffeish. Malty, grassy flavour, even a bit of alcoholic. Certainly closer to English Strong Ale than Modern IPA. As it is almost 5 months old, also perhaps lost some edge.

Fresh can from my brother: pours clear copper with a white head. Aroma is a sort of honey maltiness. Taste is very lightly bitter most honey tastin' malts. This has a sort of plasticy taste that I had only previously experienced with Bowen Island Traditional Lager. It was a bad taste then and it is a bad taste now. Also, Toronto suburbs are not "true north", according to many Canadians, it is barely Cananda.

6-pack from the LCBO. Have not bought Magnotta in a while, but their IPA was my first look at the real style and quite liked it over 15 years ago when I started rating beers. Pours a hazy golden-orange colour with a white cap, decent stay and nice lace. Aromas of grassy hops, floral with some light caramel malts. The taste is grassy bitter with a little dryness. Fruity hints in the background. Another good product, but preferred from the bottle.

Originally rated May 2004. Golden orange in colour, this IPA with a medium head leaves a foamy lacing. Lightly carbonated, I can smell hints of citrus (specially oranges). It has a medium bitter taste to it but with a smooth finish. The strong alcohol content is not unpleasant, but hits the right spot in your head. Better then Keith’s for a Canadian IPA.

Bottle - Light grassy notes. Clear gold with a small white head. Earthy hops and a light bitterness. Very English in style and quite drinkable.

Pretty decent malt profile here but not much hops. Pours clear dark amber with fizzy head, some lacing. Finishes with light bitterness. Has some booze with the caremelized malt. Soft carbonation. Bottle from brewery.

A hazed golden IPA with a thin white head. A light caramel aroma with light floral hops. In mouth, a more interesting IPA with nice floral hops, light grapefruits, some biscuitty malts, some lingering bitterness, quite quaffable. A good introductory IPA from Ontario.

Re-sample: more robust than previous tastings. Hop notes far more apparent now, with good earthy malts. Nicely balanced, still a touch light but has achieved legitimate IPA status in my mind and is worthy of my attention down the road.
