Gouden Carolus Smoked is brewed with the peated malt used to make our new peated whisky that is to be released in a few years’ time. In combination with dark roasted and caramel malts, this results a unique dark ale with the richness of a Belgian classic and a subtly smoked flavour.

Draft. A brown beer with a tan head. The aroma has notes of smoke, roasted malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of smoke, malt, caramel, and bread, leading to a dry smokey finish.

Draught at 't Anker. Red-brown color, full sized beige head. Aroma and flavor are malts, caramel, sweetish, caramelised sugars. I don't really get the smoky touch. Can't imagine they gave me the wrong beer on site. So most likely it is only lightly present and due to my hayache I don't smell much. Anyway, I like it. 8-3-7-4-14.

2 February 2019. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to tderoeck, 77ships, Rubin77, Jerre, Kevin & Anke! Hazy dark brown, reddish, with a lasting, foamy, thin, off-white head; some lacing. Aroma of dried plum, raisin, licorice, red fruit jam, fried glazed bacon, wood, vague lucifer. Taste is medium to heavy fruity sweet, raisin & dried plum wrapped into cookie dough topped with candi sugar; light spicy bitterness brings cinnamon, cookie spices, herbal touch of green tea with sugar. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering dried fruit & dough, warming touch of liqueur alcohol. Medium body, slick/fluffy texture, soft carbonation. What do you know, this needs more smoke!

Thanks for sharing tderoeck + Rubin77 + nathanvc! Sampled draft @ Bierfestival Brugge 2019. Dark red hued brown, tanned head. Nose is very much BE dark fruit, sugar, sweet candy, low gravy. Taste is low umami with sweet fruit, BE, sugar, quite a bit of sugar, thick malts, candied fruit and absolutely zero peat, seriously what gives? There is such a thing as too subtle and I am not a fan of peat in beer in general, whiskey yes, beer no. Still good beer & looking forward to the peated whiskey that they are making.

2/II/19 - sample @ Brugs Bierfestival, BB: n/a - (2019-176) Thanks to the Belgian ratebeer crew for sharing todays' beers!
Little cloudy red brown beer, creamy off-white head, stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of banana, caramel, dried fruits, malty, grains, some cow fodder. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: malty, bit sour, ever so slightly smoky, sweet. Aftertaste: more dried fruits, caramel, unripe banana and banana peel, rather boring.
