A nice thick tan head on a nearly pure black body. Nose is coffee, chocolate and a touch of vanilla. There are two groupings of taste at play here -- coffee, milk, dark chocolate and vanilla on the smooth side, balanced with an earthy bitterness, roastiness and some sourness. They work together well, but can blend more with time. Very nice.

Can.
Jet black, but not oily, with a medium brown head. Light body for the style, solid carb. Soy, and cocoa powder up front with some hints of burnt espresso. Medium to highly bitter, cocoa, and coffee round it out with hints of soy and licorice that hang on at the end.

On tap at Beyond the Pale, pours black with a reddish tinge and a small tan head. Aroma brings out lots of bready malt, some oats, and a touch of dark fruits. Flavour is chewy, with lots of oats, some roast, lots of bready malt, and some dark fruits. Has a nice sweetness and bitterness to it. Cohesive and well-structured, but just shy of being excellent.

Pitch black color. Thin dark brown head. Black strap licorice, dark chocolate, dark fruit, coffee and very rich nose. Lovely. Big coffee, roasted malt, bakers chocolate, full body, thick, fairly hoppy. Big rounded, bad ass imperial stout. I might say this is one of the best impys in Canada. Friggin amazing.

Growler: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with deep coffee notes and light dry black chocolate notes. Taste is dominated by strong coffee notes with some roasted malt with light black chocolate and a smooth oat finish. Body is pretty full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Quite enjoyable but maybe tad too much coffee notes for my own taste.

Thanks to AleRider78 for sharing this one, picked-up at the brewery. Pours a black colour with a decent mocha head for such a high ABV beer. Kind of creamy and foamy with a little lace. Mild roasted malt with fruity notes (prunes, dates). Gets sweeter as it warms up and with hints of chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel and not as thick as expected. Again, roasted malts in the taste with dark fruits. Decent bitterness giving some light grass. Mild coffee lingers. Kind of mild overall, but gets much better with food.

Nice high-style imperial stout. Everything comes together well here. Pours black with reddish tint and good head and lacing. Nice roast malt profile with some hops that mix well with dark chocolate. Finishes with medium bitterness. Tap at Winterbrewed.

Bottle - Dark roast malts and a little soy sauce. Jet black and a thin brown head. Intense roast and a light sourness with the typical oatmeal slickness. Big bold and pretty good.
