18/I/20 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ home, BB: 15/X/22 (2020-62)

Clear orange beer, big solid creamy yellowish head, pretty stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: it’s tropical fruits all right, some mango, pineapple, bit malty, some phenols, bit chemical. Not hitting the right buttons for me… MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: some phenols, banana, lots of ripe banana, I don’t like that in an IPA I must say… bitter and a little resinous. Aftertaste: pretty sweet, caramel malts, fruity, some tropical fruits, dry and bitter finish, not really getting that tropical fruits anymore, especially compared to the regular Magma, which is kind of weird… Was really hoping this would be a more modern DDH ipa or something, but it has more of a Belgian twist.

In m’n herinnering was de gewone eigenlijk lekkerder. Maar is lang geleden.

Pours unclear amberblonde. Médium big white head, creamy and very stable. Smell is bit of caramel malts, not as much dry hop as expected. Taste is strong bitter, with a touch of caramel maltyness in the back. This is a lower abv version of magma, and many elements are to be recognized, but they didn't keep the same balance between bitter and body. This one is more thin, whilst the perceived bitterness is at least as high. Not as much sweetness from the malts to counter it either. As for hoppy aromas, I expected this to be... Wel, more tropical. Maybe they just ment the lower abv, and thus easier drinkability on tropical weather? More bitterness is more refreshing? Not sure. It's a pretty good beer on it's own, but not as good as the regular magma, and the name doesn't match the product to me.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Pours hazy ochre-orange with a big, lasting, foamy, white head. Aroma of pineapple, peach, lychee, honey, orange peel, grapefruit, white pepper. Taste is light to medium fruity sweet, notes of tangerine, pineapple, soft peach, pairing with bitter mango & orange peel, a tad spicy & piney, supported by bready & subtle honey-like malts. Dry, earthy hoppy finish, more grapefruity, bittersweet mango, something vaguely dank. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Not rich & thick enough to satisfy as a 'DIPA' and apart from that, not tropical enough either. Glad to have made the acquaintance, however.

Thick, dense yellowish head, as whipped eggwhite, over faintly veiled copperish orange beer. Fruity nose, mainly exotic fruit, but not very intense - paired with a more wild aroma, as strange, unusual grains. Pretty bitter, with a quite woody character, much less fruity than the nose. Mainly orange peel, orangemarmalade, bananapeel. Bit astringent, very spritzy carbonation, hopoilslick, medium bodied. No, not really convinced... by the name. It's however, a good non-USA IPA.
