This traditional India Pale Ale was first produced in 1987 for a customer going through a divorce. Alimony was one of the first craft IPAs and gained cult status after articles appeared in Newsweek and Playboy. Brewed with an abundance of hops from the Pacific Northwest, 70 IBUs and 6.8% ABV. “It’s irreconcilably different.”

bottle - Pours hazy orange with good lacing and smells of citrus hops. It tastes of caramel malt and moderately bitter hops. There’s not much nuance here but it’s pretty good.

12oz bottle. Murky orange-tan, dulled. Thin off-white head. Bitter orange-grapefruit aroma, some earthy APA tones. Quite a solid amount of hop bitterness, this is a pretty respectable beer. Toasty, clean malt tones. Rich, chewy some pleasant toffee/caramel tones. Has both APA and IPA attributes, but comes off as an American Strong Ale to me, not unlike Arrogant Bastard. Grassy, dry, bitter hop tones, a pleasant escape from WI beers.

Slightly hazy copper coloured body with a very thin, fast-dying off-white head. Aroma of light grassy hops, some malt, a touch of sweetness and a bit of herbal notes. Medium-bodied; Grassy herbal biting hops at first with a bitterness of dry malt with some light grapefruit and a touch of oak at the very end. Aftertaste is dry, showing a lot of herbal hops with a good malt balance. Overall, not as bad as I was expecting. Not as hoppy as I’d prefer, but a grassy and more rough hop kick, but the balance of malt is nice and the beer is actually worth drinking. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 28-April-2011 for US$1.79 sampled at home in Washington on 21--July-2011.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 4 July 2011) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, hoppy nose with pine needles, citrus peel and crystal malt. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of pine needles, orange peel, grapefruit and a slightly sharp crystal malt profile. Generous bitterness in a dry finish. Medium body. Nice and tasty, with quite a hop bite.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear amber, brief head. Aroma of old grapefruit peels and butter. Mid sweet with clean, bold mouthfeel and solid body. Fruity with buttery cookies and salty grapefruit. Long mildly resiny bitterness.

Pours amber with a foamy beige head. Aroma is rather malty. Med body. Flavor is more floral than anything. Underlying mild roast caramel. Granted, this is more bitter than many IPAs. It finishes bitter with caramel, and seems balanced. Bitter enough to seem astringent. No question it’s a good beer.

Hah hah, alimony...and its the bitterest style around, how true. Smells like a big heavily hopped lager of some sort. Funny label, on a screw off top almost stubby bottle. Yea, irraconcilably different than a pale ale fer sure. Thickish medium thin head, looks viscous. On the palate, just like a good ipa should; creamy grapefruit rind of the green variety with some citrus surpize. Oily soapy creamy palate...hey; did I SAY CREAMY AGAIN? Yeah, creamy handsoap from the foamy handsoap container; now this flavor is bordering on double ipa, or should I say imperial? Wew, evolves into a more and more rude ipa, just like the bitternesws you ipa lovers dig. I think the CO2 provides than fine creamyness; something you don’t get in an ipa too often. Going rototiller! Finish? what finish, never goes away with its negabilly, give me a chaser, thing.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 2/6/11

Aroma: The nose has some floral hops, caramel, toast, herbs, and a little citrus
Appearance: Pours a clear rust-like color with a small, lasting white head and light lace
Flavor: The taste is mostly herbal/floral hops and caramel, decent bitterness, light sweetness
Palate: Medium bodied with a somewhat sticky mouthfeel, soft carbonation, and decent drinkability
Overall Impression: It's funny to think that this one was once marketed as the most bitter beer in the world at 80 IBUs. Things sure have changed for the bitter since then! (Apologies for the awful pun) This isn't a bad IPA. It has a decent flavor and a solid drinkability. There isn't anything particularly outstanding about it, but I don't want to dismiss it as mediocre either. Also, I enjoyed the name/explanation for what it's worth.
