Leinenkugel’s is pleased to bring back Leinenkugel’s Big Butt Doppelbock into its limited-release portfolio. The name "Big Butt" comes from the image of two goats butting heads that you see on the label. Bock means billy goat in German and Leinenkugel’s Big Butt Doppelbock’s name and label pokes fun at the goat’s springtime mating ritual. The result is a malty, rich, full-bodied bock beer brewed with two-and six-row pale and specialty malts and two specialty hops. Like all Leinie’s beers, Big Butt Doppelbock is handcrafted one batch at a time in our historic Chippewa Falls brewery.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 4/6/2015. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, plum, molasses, light chocolate, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, plum, molasses, light chocolate, light nuttiness, herbal, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, plum, molasses, light chocolate/nuttiness, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity, balance, and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is okay. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid doppelbock style. All around good complexity, balance, and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. The mouthfeel and robustness of malt flavors were lacking, but the taste was generally what I expected in the style. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Date stamped in green: Apr 13/15 on the side of the bottle.
For tonight, this was poured into a mug. Other times, this was poured into a pilsener glass, there was barely any difference.
The rest of the appearance was a decent looking slim half finger-ed white foamy head that held its own for a good minute before gently dissipating into little lumpy looking valleys of light foaminess.
The smell had a fairly decent roasty nutty malty substance with a subtle \"meatiness\" to it. Slight smoke, hmmm...different, but enjoyable.
The taste had a big full rich roasted nutty maltiness running sweetly around my tastebuds. There’s a slight rich nutty malty aftertaste leading to a semi-quick dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a good sessionability about it. This one really rolls smooth and nutty across my tongue.
Overall, ya know, I can’t knock it. I think Leinie’s made a good doppelbock with a slight \"smokey/meaty\" twist on its aroma. I’d have this again.

12 oz bottle from the grocery store. A 5.8% doppelbock, really? Aroma is wet river rock, roasty, earthy, cocoa, toasted marshmallow. Pours dark brown but looks ruby red in the light; collapsing beige head. Taste is sweet and savory, roasty, chocolate. A little thin, medium body, creamy mouthfeel. This actually tastes pretty good. Not bad.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours dark copper brown with a beige/tan head. Aroma is malty. But not overly sweet. Med minus body. Flavor is malty, hinting at cola, but it’s not "substantive". Finishing thin and not all that strong in flavor. There are hops, but somehow this just doesn’t blend together in a tasty fashion. Needs more of everything.

Bottle. A- Umami, malty, smoky, roasted. A- Dark brown color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Meaty, smokey, umami, roasted, malty, watery. P- Medium body, thin texture, average carbonation, smokey finish. O- Big Butt is a perfect name for this beer. Why so? Because it tastes like a big can of ass. I love doppelbocks but this was the worst thing I have drank in some time. Tasted like someone took some rotten sausage, liquid smoke, and burnt wood chips and threw them in a blender. Bad, bad stuff this is. At least it looked nice. The way it tasted you’d expect it to look like a can full of runny shit.

Bottle. Pours deep ruby chestnuts, medium tan head, decent lacing. Aroma is toffee, nutty, green apple, a bit smoky, pine. Flavor is quite sweet, little bitterness, a fair bit of acidity, apple, roasty, a bit burned. Odd. Medium body, astringent.

Pours with a largish, light brown head covering a clear dark brown body. Aroma of rotten fruits, vanilla and tabacco. Some splotchy lacing. Tastes of something nutty, soil, and some light porter-dry coffee notes. Fizzy.

bottle. I like it. Doesnt have the same uniqueness of the Optimator/Celebrator but still a nice beer and by far the best Leinenkugel I’ve had.

Dense, off-white head that quickly diminishes and dark copper, clear body. Aroma displays notes of roast, cherry, vanilla and nuts with a hint of caramel. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately acidic. Slightly bitter in the finish. Medium body and watery texture, in fact a very watery texture. Just OK.
