If you’ve got a destination in mind, it’s not the best time to ride the Lion. But, if you’re ready to meet the Lion halfway in terms of destination, brace yourself and hold on tight! Influenced by Head Brewer Dan Lipke’s Scottish roots, Ride the Lion is a Wee Heavy Ale aged in fresh bourbon barrels. A strong malt body couples with rich bourbon notes to give this Wee Heavy a full range of malt flavor in this take on a classic Scottish style.

22 oz. bottle purchased at One Stop Market stamp on neck reads 6/19/2014. Hazy color garnet color with soapy lace. Aroma is very mellow bourbon and sticky figs dipped in caramel. Rather sweet flavors with a sticky mouthfeel from Toffee caramel and dark fruit. Bourbon helps round out the by adding a little alcohol burn with a warming finish.

Bottle. Pours very hazy reddish amber, small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly, decent lacing. Aroma is caramel, toffee, bourbon, wood. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, lots of caramel, toffee, bourbon and vanilla notes, but also a harshness from woody astringency that becomes more offputting as more is drunk. Pedestrian attempt in the end.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 6/19/2014. Pours hazy dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, apple, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, oak, light smoke/roast, light nuttiness, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, apple, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, oak, light smoke/roast, light nuttiness, and yeast/aok earthiness on the finish for a while. Slight earthy/oaky bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, apple, vanilla, bourbon, oak, coconut, light smoke/roast, light nuttiness, nd yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible robustness and complexity of big dark/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a fantastic malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged scotch ale! All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and fruity yeast ester flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Candia Rd Dark amber/brown color with a decent sized off white head that shows moderate retention. Sweet malty sugary aromas with hints of smoke and oak. Sweet sugary maltiness with lots of dark fruitiness. Light smoke and oak flavors with a solid shot of alcohol towards the finish. Medium to thick body with a sweet sticky mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. Not horribly complex and a touch high on the alcohol burn but a solid sipper.

22 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Hazy caramel brown/copper with under a finger of off-white head. Aromas of bourbon, oak, subtle dark fruit. Tastes of bourbon, big oak and dark fruit, some caramel. Barrel character seems pretty simplistic. Medium body with a dry finish. Syrupy sticky mouthfeel that lingers. Medium-low carbonation. Solid but not one of my favorite barrel aged offerings from Clown Shoes.

22 oz. bottle. Cloudy brown liquid topped by a small tight beige head. Big bourbon and sweet malt nose. Hints of butterscotch dance in the air. Upfront, lot’s of sweet buttery caramel malt with rich woody bourbon notes. Sticky mouthfeel, resiny hops and sweet vanilla bean come through in the mid-taste. This is a big, bold, beautiful brew that demands the respect it deserves. Rich and complex with a warming alcohol finish. It’s all too much for me to take, the love that’s shining all around you!

Dark plum. No head. Lots of dark plum. Nose is sweet but not enticing. Taste is redeeming. Very sweet which is a turn off. Lots of grape juice whiskey is forward but a lot of candy and medicine. Slight oak barrel wheat and melon

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark amber with a foamy white head. Aromas of peat and bourbon. Full bodied or nearly. Flavor is very bourbon/vanilla with lots of peaty malt (which may mean hardly detectable to other folks), Like I think I’m sensitive. I’m so me. And I’m so into rating beers tonite. So trust me. This is woodily delicious. It’s as good as bacon!!!!! Tho it’ s not bacon. This is absotutely amazingly tasty. Ride the Lion!
