Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

Bottle: Poured a clear amber color dunkel with a large foamy had with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of banana cake ester are pretty strong with light sweet notes and some what malt. Taste is a good mix between banana bread ester with light cloves and some light wheat malt notes also discernable. Body is a bit light for the style with good carbonation. Nice work on the yeast strain with huge ester but lacking body and malt profile is a bit weak for the style.

bottle - Pours clear light amber with a fizzy off-white head. It has a spicy yeast and banana aroma. The flavor is of sweet caramel and bananas. It’s medium bodied and a bit bland. Okay overall, but I’m not impressed.

12 oz bottle from a Sampler Pack from Safeway Salinas. Nose is banana, cloves, and almost a graham cracker breadiness. Lightly hazy copper with a big, long lasting, heavy lacing beige head. Flavor is banana, yeast, a light sweetness, and a hint of alcohol.

Tap @ Flying Saucer KC. Orange brown appearance with a cream colored head. Dark wheat, banana, clove, fairly typical, notable nose. Dark malty, huge banana, clove, somewhat spicy, wheat malty flavor. The banana and clove notes are in overdrive but I still enjoy the beer.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s this beer poured a caramel-brown color with a large foamy cream colored head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was light banana, clove, a touch of citrus and moderate bread. The aroma was bitter and bready with notes of caramel, clove, a touch of banana, tart citrus and nut. The finish was long, tart, bread, caramel, citrus and clove. Fairly full bodied. Nice.

On tap at poor richard’s. Looks good and yummy, brown and hazy and all. Has barely any aroma but there is a laid back simpoly clean beer smell about it. Yes, mild banana flavors with no bitterness what so ever. It does taste a little darker than I was expecting. Enjoyable on the taste buds. Quite creamy intexture. Just a little carbonation. Interesting mild and voluptuos beer drinken experience.

12 oz. Bottle. Pours cloudy brown, light fluffy head, some lacing. Nose is clove, earthy funk, slight banana. Taste is largely reflective of the smell, a decent example of this style, nothing to knock your socks off. Drinks smooth, if the mouthfeel is a bit watery. Decent beer, and one of the few readily available dunkels MOST people can get their hands on.

12 ounce bottle opened 9/3/10. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. The aroma is yeasty with banana and spice notes. The taste is bready, with banana, spice and a tart, bitter finish. Medium bodied. Fairly straightforward example.
