Sour rye ale with tangerine zest and vanilla aged in oak barrels

We love our Sour in the Rye. We love Sorrento. We had a bunch of tangerines and vanilla on hand. It was really that simple. A play on the citrus and honey notes of the rye ale and vanilla from aging in oak barrels, Sour Tangie is citrus-forward with that creamy sweet perception that only vanilla can provide.

Sour ale brewed with rye and flavoured with tangerine and vanilla, a rather exotic creation by The Bruery’s sour department (Terreux), sampled at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest 2019. Off-white, loose, open head vanishing quickly, clear and warm orange blonde robe with peachy tinge. Aroma of dried tangerine peel but also actual orange or mandarin, white vinegar, lemon juice, coriander seed note, sourdough and indeed vanilla sweetness. Sour onset, very acidic and tangy, softish carb, supple and bit oily mouthfeel, slick bready-cereally maltiness dried by ongoing acidity – lactic sourness from the beer, but added citric acidity as well, resulting in an almost burning feeling; the citrus adds pleasant brightness as well as finishing astringency, while the vanilla does its job retronasally, but in a subtle way. Somewhat far-fetched perhaps – I don’t see much use of vanilla in sour ales generally speaking – but very colourful and lively, I would love to revisit this on a hot summer day, even if the burning acidity is very ‘American’ and a bit too much for its own good.
