This Russian Imperial stout is just bursting with an abundance of character! One of our biggest beers, coming in at 9.5% abv, is sure to be the new favorite of stout fans. Giant Slayer is an intense stout that presents itself with huge roasted, chocolate, and coffee malt flavors. Although well hopped, this beer is still very balanced. Giant Slayer provides a rich, full bodied drinking experience with dark hints of old world style.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, fudge, raisin, prune, date, licorice, light smoke/char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roast/bready malt and moderate fruity yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, fudge, raisin, prune, date, licorice, light smoke/char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, fudge, raisin, prune, date, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt and moderate fruity yeast ester flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth and creamy/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a pretty good Russian imperial stout. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt and moderate fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. This is a little too heavy on the English yeast presence, but still does have some nice stout complexity going on as well. An enjoyable offering.

Smells very good. A bit on the syrupy side with the consistency. Smells of hops, pungent roast and some booze though well disguised. Colour black caramel. Pretty low carbonation. Light, sweet finish. Bottle from Megabev.

Rich, dense dark brown coloured body with a very thick rich brown head with 90% opacity for the body. Aroma of smoked peat, pit fruits, roasted malt, meat and mushrooms, oak and a touch of cherries and milk. Full-bodied; Rich, luscious malty body with a good set of caramel, milk, toffee and nuts - followed by a lot of roasted malt, some smoky notes and a lot of alcohol. Aftertaste shows some good complexity with the malt hitting hard at first then some good sweetness, then followed off by a lactic flavour. Overall, a nice imperial stout - from the ratings, I was getting worried ,but it looks like they changed the recipe or something - my bottle was nice and showed a lot of complexity and nice flavours throughout. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 06-November-2010 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 11-June-2011.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a light brown head. Chocolate and coffee aroma with a bit of cream. Flavor is roasted coffee with chocolate and a high roasty bitterness with a bit of hops and dark fruit. A good imperial stout, if nothing too special.

Bottle. Pours black with a brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma is full of roasted malts with an underlying coffee note and on odd earthy note as well. Flavor is similar with lots of roasted malts, an odd sweet earthy note and some backing coffee

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Deep opaque brown body, thin tan to light brown head. Dryish nose with roasted malts, coffee, and soy. Body dominated by burnt caramel and coffee, with a soy-like sweetness. Bitter finish. Rather simple.

This stout poured a creamy deep black colour with a nice thick, creamy, brown head. Not much lacing. To the nose there are scents of cocoa, coffee, caramel, molassass and nuts. First sip is smooth and flavourful with flavours of coffee most prodominant. Finish is roasty with a little hopp flavour lingering.
