Trying is a must. Clothing is optional.

Paying homage to a rather (in)famous surf spot/clothing-optional beach in San Diego, Nelson the Greeter is the newest hoppy offering from Port Brewing. Using the brash flavors of Nelson hops to lead the charge, the Greeter has a strong hop supporting cast using Denali, Lemon Drop, and Mosaic varietals to round out this India Pale Ale.

Notes of gooseberry and passionfruit dominate the nose with clean tangerine and freshly cut stone fruit notes leading to a smooth bitter citrus finish.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 7/9/2018. Pours crystal clear deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, white grape, citrus peel/rind, light pepper/pine, toasted biscuit, light honey/caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, white grape, citrus peel/rind, light pepper/pine, toasted biscuit, light honey/caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, white grape, citrus peel/rind, light pepper/pine, toasted biscuit, light honey/caramel, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and slightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6%. Overall this is an awesome IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. It has Nelson hops as advertised; but also Denali, Lemon Drop, and Mosaic. Very juicy and fairly dank hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, and not overly sweet. A really enjoyable offering. Love the hop profile.

Port Brewing in San Marcos, one of those successful names in American craft brewing, celebrating the Nelson Sauvin hop variety, which was developed in the year 2000 in New Zealand and has become all too well known in craft beer culture since then. From a 473 ml can (the familiar American 16 fl. oz.) which sadly mentions no date whatsoever, so I can only hope this is still reasonably fresh. Forms a very frothy, pillowy, hops-enhanced, egg-white, large-bubbled but fairly stable, thickly papery lacing head crowning an immediately hazy, ochre-tinged straw blonde beer with warmer peachy hue. Aroma is fortunately still bright and fragrant, with impressions of pomelo, starfruit, yellow grapefruit juice, lime zest, wet marijuana, sweet white onion, fresh dill, spruce needles, withering absinth wormwood leaves, fermenting pear juice, lemon verbena, soggy white bread, some stale armpit sweat dankness. Crisp and clean fruitiness in the onset, hinting at starfruit, lime, green banana and unripe white grape with grapefruit juice-like hop bitterness apparent from the start as well as a vague green apple sourishness underneath; lively, minerally carbonation but fit for the style, lean and slick, oily mouthfeel. White bready and cereally maltiness, only restrainedly sweetish, tad grainy and perhaps a bit thin to fully support what is following: a long, leafy, bitterroot- and grapefruit peel-like hop bitterness stretching over the entire back half of the mouth and going down into the throat with lingering resiny effects, persisting for a long time and severely drying and spicy - but somehow still not overly harsh. Grapefruit-, pine- and aromatic herb-like aromas are released retronasally. Classic modern West Coast style IPA (in spite of the immediate haziness which makes it look like a NEIPA at first glance), uncompromisingly bitter yet highly aromatic, with grapefruity and piney aspects upfront; the dry white wine-like element I tend to associate with Nelson Sauvin, however, remains in the background, so I am left a little bit disappointed still - yet there is no doubt in my mind that this aspect that this is much more bright when sampled fresh at Port Brewing's taproom in San Marcos. In this canned, 'travelled' form: pleasant, classically constructed 'old school' West Coast IPA in terms of aroma and flavour, and in spite of the NEIPA hype I still love those. Technically flawless and highly enjoyable offering for the hopheads.

On draft at Elliott Bay Pizza. Poured into the Elliott Bay glassware that is either new, or I haven't been here in a while. Clean, clear, shiny golden pour. Patchy foam head. Quite a bitter hop presence going on here. Citrus peel, cool grapefruit, a piney finish. Surprisingly bitter as the ultimate assessment though. Bordering harsh. Cracker grain becomes more and more noticeable as this goes. Expectations were high, but this one was just alright for me.

Recently purchased can drunk 11/9/17.
Warm-toned honey-peach-apricot golden, lightly hazy, with a small, white head showing modest retention.
Very "dry" white wine-like character is noticeable, albeit not particularly strong or interesting. Rather grassy, somewhat grapefruit and pine-tinged notes are prominent, while it's clean and light on both yeast and malt aspects (typical sparse cracker-like character and no melon/bubble gum/dough from the yeast). No alcohol noted.
Rather thin, extremely dry, somewhat husky texture is further exacerbated by astringent, resinous hop bitterness. This is definitely not a good showcase of the Nelson hop. Nothing juicy here, nor any interesting mineral character. Really just lemon, very limited white wine and then a ton of resinous pine and white grapefruit skin. Palate does get a bit of a reprieve as it warms/breathes, as a bit more hop character emerges and a pinch of softer malt is noted, but this thing needs a lot more supple of a malt texture to offset all of this hop acid.

Port Brewing The Greeter IPA Glowing gold with a sense off-white head and a classic citrusy west coast IPA aroma. Medium bodied and dry. The taste is crisp bitter pine and citrus. A good IPA with which to greet the start of my evening. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
