Low on alcohol, high on flavour! Vedett Session IPA is the ideal choice when you have to go the distance. Because settling in for a session shouldn’t mean having to settle for anything less than a full-flavoured taste experience! Even before that first refreshing sip of Vedett Session IPA, the first thing that hits you is its intense aroma of citrus and pine resin. Hold it to the light and you would even say this golden, slightly cloudy Belgian ale glows. Taste it (finally!) and the initial burst of refreshing acidity slowly develops into a crisp, flavoursome bitterness. With a distinctly hoppy aftertaste that beckons for more.

33cl bottle at a burger joint in Brussels. A pale straw coloured pour with a loose white head; fresh floral aroma; sweetish taste with a pleasant herbal bitterness. Light and refreshing.

Bottle at home. Clear golden with white head. Paper, light grassy, dull grapefruit, white cheese. It has some funny ‘white’ aromas like oats, cheese and paper, mixed with mineral water. There’s some light dank hops, soft crisp malts too. Wort. Light sweet and under medium bitter. Over light bodied with dry bitter mineral water finish. Almost like a non-alcohol beer. Not terrible I guess.

Free bottle provided by the Belgian magazine HUMO. Pours clear pale golden with a lasting, small, frothy, white head; little lacing. The aroma contains kiwi & grapefruit, wheat & grain, bready malt, citrus, grass, hay, hint of tonic. It tastes light to medium bitter, somewhat hoppy but mosty grainy, and light fruity sweet, hints of yeast & wheat with a (citric) sour back. Dry, wheaty & bready finish. LIght body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Effectively lacking sufficient hoppiness to be a decent Session IPA. Very refreshing, that much is certain, even tasty at 2.7%, but nothing to get excited about.

Moortgat going all the way with their attempts at being hip and contemporary, reducing their Vedett IPA, already rather half-hearted as an IPA, to a session IPA that has been hitting the (even supermarket) shelves for several weeks now, conveniently and probably not coincidentally just before the arrival of summer. Tightly paper-lacing, egg-white, thick and moussy, long-lasting closed head over a cristal clear, pale but pure, pale lager-like metallic golden blonde beer with some large bubbles rising up here and there, turning equally misty and vaguely greenish-ochre with sediment. Aroma of withered green kitchen herbs, starfruit, banana, white bread dough, old lemon zest, cold camomile tea, honey, green apple, unripe pear, paste, cold and spoiled leek soup, minerals. Spritzy, sweetish and sourish onset, lots of green apple acetaldehyde, some unripe banana and a touch of pineapple, minerally and bit numbing carbonation, thin yet soapy, even weirdly thinly glueish mouthfeel. This paste- or plaster-like effect accompanies the rest of the palate, over a simple cereally malt sweetishness (almost pale lager-like but a bit fuller and 'slimier'), while a hop effect grows, yet never fully blooms into what I expect from anything mentioning Cascade, Simcoe and Centennial on the label: there are oniony and citrusy hints in the background, but everything seems drowned into some spoiled green vegetable soup-like effect providing a soft end bitterness, yet insufficiently so to lend the finish enough body - as would be the case in any truly good ISA. A doughy, plastery, unripe hard banana-like flavour lingers more than anything credibly hoppy. Refreshing, sure, but if anything, this is an 'impoverished' version of the regular Vedett 'IPA' - just as I expected. If a company like this puts so much money into producing and advertising this new product on a classically Belgian market, then I guess they could not afford to go all the way, but then I am left wondering what the purpose of this new beer could be. Failed as a session IPA - which is exactly what it aims to be, but drinkable, style issues aside. However I, for one, will never have this redundant beer again, that much is certain.
