Gouden Carolus Indulgence [Indulgence, something that is done or enjoyed as a special pleasure] is a limited series of beers brewed every year with varying content. These ‘Indulgence’ brews are exclusive delights to be savoured at special moments or shared with special people.
Botanik is the 3rd taste expression released under this label. A special blond beer was brewed using barley and wheat for this purpose. A selection of 4 natural botanicals was added during the ageing process: elderflower, angelica root, cloves and rosemary. A pleasantly surprising bouquet!

75cl bottle from Vanuxeem. Drunk on a balmy sunny evening. Pours cloudy yellow, exuberant white head. Aroma is fluffy sweet blonde yeast. Taste similarly presents a confidently sweet Belgian blonde character, the botanicals initially seem a little modest, emerging more as the beer settles with ginger and clove notes, some mild floral elements though the rosemary is less discernible. Smooth, sweet, enjoyable blonde with interesting herbal moments that complement the flavour profile well.

Hazy pale golden color, foamy white head with good lasting, some lacing. Aroma is yeasty, slightly citrus, flowery notes. Flavor is light bittery, flowery, yeasty, light malty. Fruity final with yeasty notes.

Geproefd en gekocht bij Dranken Maes in Dendermonde op 10-11-2017. En thuis geproefd op 24-02-2018. Gouden Carolus Indulgence 2017 Botanik is een blond en troebel biertje dat bij het uitschenken een normale tot ietwat mindere hoeveelheid schuim produceert. Dit blijft slechts zwak aan het glas kleven en vormt een gelijkmatige laag in je glas. Slechts weinig CO2 verzadiging te zien met fijne belletjes. Het schuim zakt na een tijdje in elkaar tot een dun laagje. Het aroma van Gouden Carolus Indulgence 2017 Botanik is wat vreemd, het kruidige en zeker de vlierbloesem overheerst alles. De smaak is bitterig en zoet met weer de al-overheersende vlierbloesem. In de mond geeft Gouden Carolus Indulgence 2017 Botanik een medium tot volle body, hij is ook wat bitterdroog en door het prikkelende koolzuurgas heeft hij een luchtige textuur. Kwa totaalgevoel twijfel ik nog steeds tussen harmonieus en teleurstellend. Harmonieus omdat het bittere en het zoete zeer goed afgewogen doorkomen maar teleurstellend omdat de vlierbloesem alles overheerst. De nasmaak vloeit lang uit en is bitter en wat droog met ook een lichte alcoholtoets maar weerom overheerst de vlierbloesem hier alles. Een zeer kruidig biertje om langzaam van te genieten en best nog een aperitiefhapje bij te eten. De vlierbloesem is lekker maar overheerst alles te veel. Bottle at the 11th Brugge beer Festival, Brugge, Belgium. A hazy golden/yellow coloured pour with a healthy white head on top. Belgian yeasty, fruity, spice aroma. Tastes Belgian, yeasty, fruity, herbal, spice. Expected a lot more from this World class brewery.

Pretty cloudy orange beer, huge overflowing white creamy head (the brewer/representative was pouring without tilting the glass, resulting in a lot of loss), adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of banana, bit malty, yeast, sweetish impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: spicy, yeast, pretty bitter, herbal, some tannins, banana peel. Aftertaste: yeast, banana, rather sweet, bit spicy, more yeast, soft bitterness, lots of alcohol noticeable. Not a big fan of this.
