Damme is an official “book city”. The modern codex format, where pages are bound to a spine, replaced the ancient scroll. You have to turn the page to continue your story.

Codex is a juicy Belgian blond ale of 6% ABV with a subtle fruity-spicy yeast complexity, a malty flavour and a dry finish. The generous whirlpool additions of Motueka hops from New Zealand equip the beer with a distinctive freshly crushed citrus and “Mojito” lime character, with background notes of tropical fruit.

Water: Damme. Malt: pils, munich, oats, wheat. Hops: Goldings, Motueka. Yeast: Belgian abbey.

Bouteille 33cl, BB 20/01/2022, lot# CO/006-007.

3/VII/20 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ home, BB: 2/I/22 (2020-574)

Little cloudy orange blond beer, small creamy dense white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: fruity, malty touch, bit floral, some banana, peaches, sweet impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet, malty, somewhat chemical, ripe banana, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: yeast, more ripe banana, bit sugary, some alcohol, not bad, not great, just a decent beer. Would’ve liked it a little more bitter at least.

Paired with a white asparagus pizza, with red onion, Italian parsley and black olives.

1 February 2020. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, Kevin, Niels & Cynthia! Hazy yellow, unstable, frothy, white head. Aroma of banana, ripe yellow apple, apricot, lime, sorbet, melon. Taste has sweet banana & apricot, rather 'Belgian' yeasty character, yoghurty backbone with sour & spicy accents. Dryish, floral hoppy finish, lingering yellow fruit, citrus, yeast & a hint of jenever alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Refreshing but less convincing than Siphon's new Derby beer.
