Bottle at home. Clear golden color with a decent sized white head. Smell and taste malts, a bit sweet, light overripe fruit notes, apricot jam, a bit dusty in the aroma. Body is medium, carbonation soft to average. Hmm ok. 6-3-6-3-13.

The fourth embodiment of this Homo Beerectus project by Oude Maalderij brewer Jef Pirens and his 'sidekick' Brecht Kindt, a return to the classic, 20th-century Belgian tripel style; steini bottle from The Beer Shop in Kontich near Antwerp. Medium thick, slightly 'membranous' lacing, egg-white, regular head with opening middle, lightly hazy 'old gold' colour, warm with a tenuous 'fog' of disparate yeast bits at first, but turning misty and more ochre-ish with sediment. Aroma of ripe banana, freshly ironed cloth, an immense amount of DMS (stewed white cabbage) to the point where it - to me at least - becomes very obnoxious and hinders me to take another sip, pear syrup, dry white bread, old coriander seed, melting Brie cheese, old vegetable soup, camomile tea, young 'jenever', egg yolk, apple sauce, apricot jam, white pepper, straw, cauliflower cream soup, frying button mushrooms, parsnip, bitter honey. Fruity onset, crisp and estery, very Belgian with hints of sweetish banana, apricot and pear mixed with a more subdued fresh fig sourish accent, more sourish shortly afterwards due to sharpish, initially somewhat numbing carbonation, grainy and cereally maltiness with 'white' bready edges, spicy phenols and soapy coriander towards the finish but neither overdone, ending in a hayish, floral hop bitterishness and gin-like warming alcohol with a root vegetable-like earthy yeastiness to it in quite a powerful, yet still 'cleanish' way; the alcohol turns young 'jenever'-like in the end, a bit too much so and made worse by a rubbery aspect in the background, while fluffy white bread malt sweetishness lingers accompanied by a slight dash of pear and banana. I am apparently following this Homo Beerectus project even if I did not intend to do so after the second one, but the refinement of the third one convinced me. I do not, however, see how this still somewhat mysterious endeavour will lead to any true masterpieces of brewing art if this is the second disappointment for me after trying four of them (and reading reviews of the fifth); in other words, this does not quite invite me to complete the whole series - which allegedly will consist of a few dozen beers - in being an overly boozy, unpleasantly DMS-ridden tripel, the kind of which we have too many already in this country. Jef Pirens, with all due respect, can do a lot better than this even if it were just your ordinary, 20th-century style Belgian abbey tripel!

Clear medium amber colour, good frothy white head, dissipates slowly, fair lacing. Aroma pale malts, peach, Belgian yeast, cloves, light alcohol. Taste light heavy sweet and slightly bitter, malty, light toffee, candy sugar, light fruit, alcohol, yeast. Short sweetbitter aftertaste, alcohol, spicy notes, full-bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation. Pretty straigh-forward heavy duty tripel.

Bottle at De Heeren van Liedekercke, shared with Anke and Pieter. Thanks to 'De Heeren' for their explanation!
Fourth part in a series of artisan beers, made with only Belgian ingredients, and apparently subject to availability. Pours hazy ochre with a small, foamy, white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma contains banana, yeast, spices (clove), peach, hops and hay. It tastes light to medium fruity sweet and light spicy bitter; lingering bittersweet finish. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Pronounced in taste, and well-balanced.

Thanksl! Sampled bottle @ Modeste 2017. Hazy orange. Nose is low stale yeast, almost yoghurt & very heavy grainy & orange peel sweetness. Taste is extremely sweet boozy sugary orange peel, low yoghurt yeast. Body is thick boozy with yeast. Way too sweet for me but I am not into the style & for fans this is probably just about right.
