A similar brewing process to lagers with the use of lager yeast is used in the production of Royal Extra Stout. Fermentation time is much shorter than lagers, and takes place at a higher temperature. Finings traditionally composed of isinglass (fish bladder protein) are designed for yeast removal used during conditioning (storage) prior to filtration. It is also gives the aphrodisiac connotation.

Brown 275ml bottle drank while on holiday in Tobago. Best before Nov 2008, consummed Jun 2008. Very dark, a true black brew with a dark tan head, which sadly faded away to fast for me. The aroma was fairly weak, some burnt malts but little else. The taste was sweet, treacle and malts, burnt like the smell. Rich in the mouthfeel, but not creamy or milky, nor the dryness some Stouts have. A different Stout without a doubt, not unpleasant, but not a new found favourite either.

Bottle. Pours a thick motor oil color with a big bubbly head and aromas of brown sugar and a little chocolate. Flavor is a cloying mess and this beer ended in the drain. Yuck!

Originally rated September 2004. Sampled from a 500ml can, which is not very appealing to the eye (which I guess is the reason I am the first to review such a good brew). Poured a black liquid with very dim red highlights, and a brown creamy head. Left some good lacing. The aromas (too bad) were not happening. Not much there, just mild sweetness. The mouth though, was very pleasant. Started on the chocolat side and landed on a slight bitter finish. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy. A great alternative to Young’s Double Chocolat (when you can’t find it - like here in Canada).

Bottle at Miami Beach, Barbados. Smells OK, looks fine, taste for me is too sweet and one dimensional, like a flat cola, with booze. Could not finish this.

Bottle shared by GT2 at the 5/7/11 DC Ratebeer gathering. Pours a dark brown color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of dark sweet roasted malts and raisins. The taste is sweet sugary malts, some roast, some nuttiness and a bitter hoppy finish. Medium bodied.

Big black pour with a slowly fading tan head. Alarming smell a tad off like old spoiled bitter chocolate, if that's possible. Bitter strong rude volatile creamy alky initial taste. Like it was soaked in fish bladders er sumthin. Straggly slaggy slurpen first watery blacktop runoff. Yes, creamy oily dark spirit. Does not hide alky well, sticks it fuming alky in your face. I've tasted impy stouts better than this and imp stouts are low on my liking list. Finish almost ignites a gag reflex but I can hold off. Lion stout is just as nasty as this and this stuff can’t hold a candle to coopers best extra stout.

Sampled from an 11.16 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a small foamy tan head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweet and malty with notes of coco, licorice, port wine and vanilla. The flavor was light bitter and tangy with notes of port wine, cherry, cocoa, malted milk and licorice. Medium length finish. Fairly full bodied and smooth. Interesting.

Bottle from Oak Tree. Pours black with a foamy tan head. Aroma of sweet burnt malt with a cola hint. Medium body; frothy carb. It’s sweet - in a treacle way - with some dark chocolate and some cola. Aroma gets a bit metallic after awhile. Reminds me of some low ABV Scottish stouts. Definitely drinkable.

Bottle. Pours black with off white brown head. Nose of coffee, roasted malts and chocolate. Taste of roasted malts, hops, fish oil and rotted wood. Not pleasant.
