Well-done foreign stout. All the right mix of coffee and espresso here. Pours dark brown with amazing mocha-tinted head, especially for a cask beer. Nice bitter finish. Very well-balanced and well done overall. It’s nice to see Hopfenstark do a great beer that isn’t a saison. Great effort for one of the more uncommon styles out there. Cask Days 2013.

750mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours black with a medium foamy tan / light brown head. Aroma of fresh hops, moderate roasted malt, a bit of chocolate and a bit of coffee. Flavour brings out coffee, fresh hops galore, biscuity malt, and a little burnt stuff. The fresh hops come out big time here, leaving notes of fresh hops and roasted malt. Full-bodied and super easy drinking. Great stuff.

Bouteille 750ml.

Dark brown with a bubbly head. Smells lightly fruity and like it will be creamy. It is creamy with sugars - maybe too many but it is a foreign stout so there is leeway with that. Not much nuance, and perhaps lacks the heft, fruit and alcohol of the style. Reminds me of an oversized Irish stout.

Farmhouse, Burlington VT 12oz tap ($8.50): Pours a black color with a nice creamy brown head. Aroma is of coffee, chocolate, toffee, booziness, and some other grand stuff. Taste is in the same element. Kind of sweet, but still very manageable. Chocolate and coffee, not quite espresso, but still cool. Good beer and could be either chuggable or sippable, depending on your mood. At this price, I prefer the latter.
