Gold Rush #5 is the 5th transatlantic cider making collaboration, this time between Tom Oliver (of Oliver’s Cider and Perry) and Ryan Burk of Angry Orchard, New York, USA.

A full tasting, sparkling 6.5% cider with some residual sweetness, balancing acidity and full-bodied tannins. Carefully selected vintage bittersweet and sharp cider apples from traditional Herefordshire orchards were slow fermented by wild yeasts in old oak barrels and tanks then, after a malolactic fermentation in the spring Tom and Ryan came together on 3 separate occasions in Herefordshire to blend this bright, rich cider with an ‘apple skins’ nose that gives way to a robust taste with a very satisfying finish. Chill and savour this unique cider with family and friends and celebrate the “family of cidermakers” on both sides of the Atlantic and around the world.

330mL bottle, pours a clear caramel colour with almost no white head. Aroma is quite dry, with lots of barnyard notes, faint toffee apple, light tannins, and dry, peppery apple skins. Flavour is simultaneously bone dry and somewhat sweet, with toffee apple, barnyard funk, plenty of tannins, and peppery apple skins. Lightly sweet, nicely funky, and balanced well. I could do with a touch more carb, but this is real nice.

330ml cider from the producer. Pours clear gold. Strong woody aroma, cognac nods. Taste is lightly coarse, extrenely woody, with complex layers of stewed apple, caramel, toffee with additional wild elements adding clarity and sharpness with a soft sour edge. Excellent and possibly the best so far in this series.

Many thanks to minutemat for this bottle. Fruity woody nose. The cider starts intense fruity with a dry bitter body. Lots of oak barrel there, tasted even charred. Very strange aroma of fruity fresh apples on one side and charred smoky wood on the other side. So is the finish, fruity charred wood, a bit too dusty for me but very interesting idea. Tannins left, smoky charred aftertaste. Interesting stuff.
