Draught at the brewery, 12/30/15.
Deep amber with some darker auburn hues. Good clarity with a touch of chill haze and a beige head that shows moderate to moderately-high retention.
Don’t get much, if any, of the grape in the nose, though I think the grape notes meld very seamlessly with the malt and yeast character (raisins, prunes, light acidity, sweet caramel and a touch of vanilla and alcohol). Dry toffee, almost a spiciness from the alcohol and yeast, with no flaws.
Sweet caramel and toffee with light fruitiness and a warming that helps dry out the malt. Grapey-raisin flavors could potentially be some influence from the grapes, but you’d never pick it out blindly. Sweet and malty, but not syrupy or cloying in the least. Soft, comforting texture with some breadiness and a lot of warming on the end. Maybe a touch too much estery/booze character but otherwise a well-done, if somewhat unremarkable barleywine.

Poured up on tap at the brewpub where it exhibits a clear deep amber colored body that supports a thin tan head. The aroma offers up plenty of sweet dark fruity esters that are raisin and fig along with deep rich sweet smelling grapes and a dash of toffee. Nice. The taste starts smooth with some malt sweetness and getting into deep sweet grapes, raisins and figs. To midway some toffee to German dark bread drizzled in molasses comes to the surface to give this pleasing depth and richness. This is a terrific sipper. This version is so much deeper and richer and denser than the previous versions. Love it!
