Bouteille 33cl, merci Klaas, BB 03/2020.

Bottle from Geers. Amber colour, beige head disappears quickly. Smooth malty with notes of plums and dried fruit. Light bitterness in the finish. Well balanced. Good.

Bottle at Kantien, Ghent. Old ale- or barleywine-ish beer with maple syrup, in the new, Viking-inspired Totem style; apparently intended for extended cellaring so I guess I made the mistake of drinking it too young... Thick and creamy, pale beige-ish head, quickly receding and in the end disappearing completely; warm, hazy copper-tinged bronze robe. Aroma of caramel candy and indeed maple syrup, honey, white port, orange peel, nutmeg, cognac, baked banana, hints of bitter herbs, fig and a faint smokey accent. Sweet flavour, candied pear, yellow raisins, dates, sourish accent, softish carbo, thick and bit creamy mouthfeel. Nice caramelly and bit nutty malt sweetness furthered sweetened by a thick layer of maple syrup, but balanced by spicy notes in the finish, albeit not in a very hoppy way; the peppery accent is, however, mostly established by a lot of obvious, 'jenever'-like, astringent alcohol which heats the throat. Bit too alcoholic for me personally, but I can imagine this softens with age - so indeed, this must be a beer that gets better with age, I hope to be able to taste an old sample one day. For the time being: interesting, complex and warming beer, satisfying on a gloomy November evening. Once again, it shows that Totem is one of the most creative craft breweries in Belgium and certainly in the Eastern Flanders province; it also shows that the brewer is not only technically very accomplished, but also very well-informed about beer styles and beer history. Always a pleasure to meet a new Totem!

Bottle thnx to 90 ! Pours unclear warm blonde, not much head. Smell is bit yeasty. Taste is caramel, earthy, leaves, no clear maple but all the more complexity. Decent body and carbo. Bit sweet, but not more than desired. Somewhere in between a quad and a barleywine. Does this get better with age ? If so, dqmn, thats gonna be a hell of a beer ! I love it now, just dissapointed by not getting the maple syrup. Will re-rate when I open my second bottle. In years ?

Thank you Klaas! 330 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBSG17. About 4 months old at this point. Darker orange amber, tanned head. Nose is low plastic, herbal, bark syrup, thick raw maple herbal,… Taste is massive thick herbal raw bark, plastic, herbal, plant, sugar, candy, sweet cooked apple & raw cookie dough,… Taste is herbal mat syrup, low plastic. Maple is massive but raw herbal, bit plastic, bit much, interesting, tasty but also a bit much, maybe a bit more time still?
