Mélange #11 was created by your peers at a special blending competition held for our Hoarders Society members. This winning blend combines our sour rye beer with our malty anniversary ale along with sweet dates, spicy cinnamon and earthy anise. The mingled character of this tart and malty beer is like no beer that we have thought of before. Strong licorice flavors waft out the glass, but are subdued by the tartness of the sour beer and the sweet, cake-like flavors that the dates and cinnamon create. This is a phenomenal beer and a testament to the creativity of our Society members.

Quarantine Beer #139 sampled during the BBQ n Beer event at home on 05/24/2020. Cloudy brownish-amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to a dense film. Sparse strings of lace. Fruit, anise, spice and malt aroma. Medium to full body with flavors of dark fruit, black licorice, caramel malt and cinnamon. The finish is fruity and spicy with a cinnamon and anise aftertaste. Pretty weird, but decent overall.

750ml bottle. Funky ginger date sour. Cinnamon? Really different than most any beer out there, like an oddball extreme pumpkin sour. The anise adds a sharp licorice touch. Intense.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is weird and reminds me of an herbal liqueur. Some acidity that accentuates the herbal notes from the cinnamon and anise. Moderate, fruity, date notes. Some caramel and toffee notes with light burnt sugar character. A hint of alcohol. Pours a dark burnt amber color with some brown hues and a large, thick, frothy tan head that slowly but steadily recedes to the edges where it recedes to a thin film that lingers thicker on the edges. Moderate lacing and medium small legs. Flavor is weird. It’s more acidic than I was expecting with a medium high acidity and some lemon notes. Moderate cinnamon and lighter anise notes. Medium high fate character that blends into the malt notes of caramel and toffee. A light alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, not a great beer. Both the aroma and flavor are weird but for different reasons. Aroma has a ton of weird herbal notes, while the flavor is slightly medicinal with a bunch of acidic dates. In the background of both the aroma and flavor is this caramel/toffee malt note.

Bottle thanks to Will. Pours a hazy brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong black licorice, mint, anise. Thin mouth, similar flavors to nose, licorice is overpowering, very boozy, odd.

750 ml bottle, AdamC. Dirty brown color without head. Aroma is mint. Only mint, anise?? I almost only get mint
Flavor is over the top black licorice... Liquid black licorice with a really bad aftertaste. Gosh, this is awful. The drain drinks this. Lesson learned here: don’t let your customers blend your beer, for real.

Bottle 11/28/15.
Hazy, auburn, chestnut, no head.
Mint, mint and only mint. Fernet? Idk. Wtf is up w this brewery?. Not even going to line break, just go right into the terrible flavor. Putrid, mint, acetic notes, licorice and heavy ouzo and absinthe. Wow. Horrendous

Bottle, I think I bought one of these. Any beer with anise scares the crap out of me. Incredibly murky plum colored reddish brown. This smells like a dessert that went wrong. So much spice, mulch and overwhelming anise. Whoa, sour tart acid bomb with a little fruit and then anise and cinnamon and tree fruit and nope I’m good. Hard to get through even a small pour.
