Our winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnut, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts.

A nice Winter Warmer that fits the style well but doesn’t particularly excel in any category. Old Jubilation has a nice appearance, deep brown liquid with a good beige head. The aroma is predominantly light malt with a metallic tinge. It’s not bad but a bit weak. The taste is somewhat boring caramel malt with good spicing and a lightly bitter finish. The spices are particularly well done with clove and cinnamon dominant and never take on the annoying artificial character of so many other beers in the style. Unfortunately, Old Jubilation just fades into the background of my winter warmer memories. It’s well done but a bit boring. I would recommend it to fans of the style or those looking for a simple entry point to winter warmers (of course, the latter seems like a bizarre audience that I just invented).

12 oz bottle. Pours reddish amber with an off-white head. Citrusy aroma with some caramel and eathy tones. Flavor is nutty, earthy, and toasty with a lemony citrus. A really nice beer.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Chevy Chase, 2/6/10
Aroma: Nose of spice, some caramel malts, nuts, wood, and a good amount of dark fruits
Appearance: Pours a clear red/dark orange color with a thin off-white head and some spotty lace
Flavor: Taste is somewhat sweet, toffee malts, wood, spice, and a solid hop presence for balance
Palate: It is a fairly smooth beer with medium-full bodied feel, and an oily, a bit sticky, mouthfeel
Overall Impression: This is a pretty nice beer overall. Rather complex and well-balanced. Pretty enjoyable. A nice winter seasonal offering from Avery.

Appearance: Pours a dark, reddish-brown with a firm, lingering tan head. Considerable lacing as the level receded. Aroma: Nicely balanced between sweet, caramel notes and bitter hops. Flavor: Flavor is at first sweet and malty, then quickly turns happily bitter with some nice, piney hop flavor. On the swallow, the bitterness prevails, leaving the mouth with a pleasantly bitter, sticky aftertaste. Some notes of toffee and burnt malts, adding to the bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium to medium-big in body. Light and fine carbonation. Slightly warming going down. Overall Impression: Overall I was very impressed. A beautifully struck balance between malt sweetness and hop bite. Comments: Bottle pour.

21st December 2008. Clear dark brown beer. Malty and rich with underlying fruit and some nut flavours. The richness and aromatics lift this beer from the lower levels of averageness!

Bottle at Q-Brick. Malty fruit aroma with west coast hops and caramel. Lots of caramel, almost bock-like. Flavor also big caramel, spicy, slightly vineous, with cherries and a bit of sour as well. Rich fruits. Ok, but not all that special.

12 oz. bottle, 2008. 99¢ loose bottle at Binny’s. Sweet honey smell with toffee and peanut brittle notes. Deep brown but bright color, when poured, layers of the brown head fight to get past each other. Nice nut brown malt taste. Malt sweetness with a little sugar on the side. Slightly woody or peaty. Sweetness settles out leaving me to pick out more of the complex taste. No spices, as they say, but I get a suggestion of gingerbread and pecan. Slight alcohol in the nose, and a warming of the toes after drinking half the glass. Definitely in the category of a higher-alcohol winter warmer without anything excessive.
