Sampled at ACBF 2017, Vichte. Murky burgundy pour with a very thin tan head. Notes of oak, musty cellar, cherries, sour cherries, cocoa, light chocolate, wine barrel, brandy, a bit of whiskey. Really complex sour red, tons of fruit notes, perfectly balanced by the barrel notes.

At ACBF, from tap. Hair of the Dog’s take at Belgian-style cherry oud bruin, with thin, loose, deeply egg-white head and translucent mahogany-tinged, deep burgundy colour. Aroma of passion fruit, old dry sherry, sour cherries and cherry pits, lots of soaking wet oak, cassis, vanilla, redcurrant, varnish, cherry stones, wry grape peel. Sour and tart flavor, teeming with sour cherries surrounded by passion fruit- and brambleberry-like esters, strongly drying lactic tartness but with a soft, ’moelleux’, caramelly malt sweet core which I think is structurally essential in this style; generous fruity tartness goes on till the finish, where a very tannic, very dry, almost astringent woodiness takes over. The brewer, Alan, told me that some consumers deemed this astringent woodiness way over the top, but I could not be bothered by this and especially appreciate the rounded malt sweetness underlying the strong tartness - a feature often lacking in American (or other ’foreign’) attempts at oud bruin. Have a point for that alone.

ACBF 2017. Thank you for sharing kraddel, tderoeck, Travlr & friends. Sampled draft. Deep red murky watery looking brew with no head. Nose is very vinous paint thinner, very acidic, vinegar, balsamic vinegar, rotting cherry. Taste is watery rotting cherry, pure vinegar leading into aceton, leading into acetone, only thing restraining its sourness is the watery nature of it, rotting wine, rotting sweet cherries, very vinous. Body is watery, acetone, lol no. Regular version of this beer currently has 276 ratings, I have had it twice now & I have given it the lowest score out of everyone who has rated. I have absolutely no clue as to what people like about that beer & the same goes for this beer.

Draught Disparate off-white head over opaque redbrown beer. Cherries, chocolate, old wine barrels. Very vinous flavour, again styled by cherries and chocolate. Furious alcoholheat (at 6.2%!!), burning MF, explosive palate. Another winner from Alan (and extremely nice to have the brewer pour it himself!)

Sampled from tap at ACBF 2017. Hazy, reddish brown. Sweetish-sourish, slightly fruity aroma of caramel, vinegar, oak and some cherries. Sweetish, moderately sour, quite fruity taste of vinegar, oak, cherries, red grapes and some caramel, followed by a medium long, rather tart, woody-dry finish with notes of glue. Medium body, quite astringent and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay!
