Bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver, bb 09/Jan/27 G:B368
Dark amber colour, small head. Good malt depth, moderately sweet, it manages to hide the alcohol quite well, a lot of toasted nuts, but also some pithy bitterness in the finish, bitter almonds, burnt nuts. There's something good and something less impressive here, not worth the price tag (~11$).

Bottle. An unclear brown beer with a small brown head. Roasted malts, toffee, coffee, alcohol and dried fried in the aroma. A slight oxidation too. It's full bodied, warming and very smooth, with some bitterness among the sweetness. Roasted malts, coffee, toffee, prunes, cocoa and some oxidation in the everlasting warm finish. Too warming this one, but sure nice. 200822

Long-boiled American style barleywine by this Danish craft beer leader, hopped with Apollo, Mosaic and Citra. Bottle from Beergium, apparently close to three years old now (best before January 2027). Mousy, membrane-lacing, medium thick, greyish beige, slowly dissolving head but retaining around the edge, lightly hazy, deep copper-hued reddish bronze robe. Aroma of 'boerenjongens', plum jam, orange liqueur, walnut oil, rum-soaked biscuit, nutmeg, wormwood, toasted bread, old dry sherry, black tea, bayleaf, dusty old jute bags. Dried fruit sweetishness in the onset, hints of fig, medlar and dried peach, thin sourish edge, quite fizzy carbonation but in a 'refined' way fit for the style; full-bodied and vinous, yet noticeably thinned a bit by the alcohol. Smooth-edged caramelly malt base, peanutty and a little bit toffeeish for a brief moment, but quickly shifting to increasing bitterness, from malt toastiness but more so from hops, turning leafy, peppery and grapefruit pith-like in the finish, lasting for a long time. Nutmeg- and black peppercorn-like spicy aspects mingle with this long and firm bitterness, but this caramelly malt sweetness comes through in the end as well together with some bready yeasty notes, all highlighted by a considerable amount of gin-like booze, warming everything up without interfering too much with the flavours. A sign of age manifests itself retronasally, in a hint of old oxidized dry sherry. The hops have lost a lot of their aromatic features as was to be expected, but have very much retained their bittering powers, while the malts are only gently maderized rather than unattractively oxidized; still a rich, vinous, generous beer and very typically an American style barleywine indeed.

Bottle. Almost clear, deep reddish, amber body with a small beige head. Aroma is caramel malt, bread, dry fruit and a little hint of nuts/wood. Flavor is very sweet caramel malt, brown sugar, bread, biscuit, toast and some wood. Moderate bitterness. Full bodied with a rather long lasting, sweet aftertaste with a slightly boozy alcoholic finish. Feels a bit straight forward on the caramel, dry fruit and ends up too sweet and boozy for me.
