Stone 10th Anniversary IPA harkens back to our earlier Anniversary Ales, with abundant hopping at many stages of the brewing process. Appropriately, the aroma is over the top, with pronounced piney and resiny hop flavors combined with tropical fruit esters and more subtle notes of toasted malts and alcohol. Our Stone 10th Anniversary Ale weighs in at 10% alcohol by volume (perfect for a 10th anniversary beer), and has a little more color and malt character than our other IPAs. In addition to using the new Summit hop variety in the brewhouse to provide the powerful bitterness, we went back through our records and found some of our favorite hops over the years, and used them to flavor this brew, including Chinook, Crystal, and large doses of Simcoe in the dry hop to provide a huge, complex, piney, fruity and floral hop character. This is a colossal beer, big in every sense: hoppy, malty, rich, and strong! Right up our alley.

on tap -pours a light tan head and gold color. Aroma is medium malt-caramel apple, hint of spice. Taste is medium malt-caramel, apple (25% crystal malt? Or less with the one year of aging), secondary spicy hops. Smooth, mellow.

Cloudy orange with a yellowish, off-white head. Grapefruit, peach, apricot and syrup in the aroma. Alcohol is very obvious in the very sweet flavour, much hop flavour and of course, bitterness too. When it comes to sweet peachy IIPAs, I prefer the Maharaja

Bottled, thanks cquiroga! Cloudy reddish amber. Vast aroma of grapefruity hops. Solidly malty with predominant cookie malt character covered in an abundance o fsalty graepfruity hops. Lingering really bitter finish. Pretty straight forward beer, not the most complex in the world, but quality all the way through.

Poured out of a 2 liter growler that was filled back in October, ’06 consumed 05/12/07.

The beer poured out slightly hazy with an orange-ish color to it and off white head. The level of carbonation has suffered over the intervening months. The aroma is thick – sweet – chewy pine hops with a rigid spine of sweet caramelized malts. The sharp pine hop aroma has really softened over the months. Behind that is a light dark fruitiness and some sense of the ABV. As it warms it smells more and more like a barleywine as the dark fruit notes grow with intensity. The flavor starts out smooth and seemingly flavorless, oddly enough. Then sweet pine hop flavor breaks the smoothness apart along with caramel maltiness and dark fruitiness. The taste stays kind of even to about midway. As the finish approaches the prune, date and plum fruitiness grows. At the finish the remaining pine hop bittering notes struggle to assert themselves. They have been render only a shadow of what once was.

Bomber. Somewhat cloudy orange yellow pour with a big white head and quite a bit of settling. Really nice to look at it. Aroma is dry grass, sopping wet citrus and malt. The malt is the initial taste, rounds out to the citrus and a bit of alcohol in the finish. Great beer, too bad it was a one time deal. This is not as crisp / clean as Ruination, but it is certainly more complex.

Rerate 06/26/08: Had a sample of this in the Stone gift shop and the aging by 2 years has improved what was already a good beer. The look and smell of the beer are primarily the same but it has more nuanced flavors. I thought this beer was very good on draught and aged a couple years.

01/08/07 (4.1): Thanks to cmaruschak for sharing. The beer is a clear orange-amber color with a thin ivory-colored head that stays for a bit. Thin spotty lacing on the whole glass. Piney hops aroma that has floral and citrus notes here and there. Rich and smooth mouthfeel with a nice sweet malt base that props up a juicy, resiny hops flavor. Sweet fruit (peaches) shows up at times too. As with most Stone beers, the complex flavor profile does not affect drinkability at all. The finish is hoppy with a good malt base. Overall this beer seems to fall somewhere between a normal and double IPA. While not solidly in either category, it is still a very good beer.

Bottle courtesy of Tpaliga: Poured a medium amber color ale with a medium slightly off-white head with OK retention. Aroma of bit citrus hops is clearly dominant as expected with some nice trace of caramel malt. Taste is bitter as hell with the dominant force of the citrus hops with a good base of caramel malt. Body is a bit thin and less filtration would have been appreciated but alcohol is very well hidden. Well done for the style but not necessarily something I would go for very often.

(Bottle 65 cl) Clear, dark amber with a small, off-white head. Very fresh grapefruity aroma. Medium body with very sweet caramel and some lightly medicinal notes. Bittersweet finish. A bit unusual. 011206
