YER BEN is the signature ale of Scotland’s Michelin star chef Tom Kitchin, who took the passion of the Isle of Skye Brewery and created this exceptionally smooth ale.

‘My grandfather Ben Robinson, or Popa as we called him, was a true connoisseur of beer. He loved Scotland, especially the Highlands and Islands where he spent many happy times. You would often find my popa deep in conversation or simply reflecting on life with a fine ale in his hand. It gave him great enjoyment to always carefully consider the quality and condition of his beer choice. He inspired me to do the same.’

Hops: Challenger

500ml bottle from the brewery. Poured a clear light amber colour with a fizzy white head and a few bubbles. The aroma is malt light toffee, woody hops. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a crisp, light, earthy, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

500ml bottle from the brewery shop. Clear golden with a fizzy off white head. On the nose there's biscuit, grass and lemon. Flavour is earthy citrus, really quite bitter, and a little spice. Not the most exciting but it went down a treat

Bottle at home in Hackney - thanks to Mom and Nellie. Pours totally clear gold with a creamy, off-white head. Nice and simple, some toasted bread, a mild grainy note, honey and toasted caramel, British yeast. Light bodied with fine to massaging carbonation. Balanced finish, with soft leafy bitterness, more bready malts, mellow yeast, grass. Fine.

Aus der Flasche im 2018-06 getrunken. Getreidig. wässrig, dünn und langweilig. Irgendwo ist das noch eine unharmonisches Hopfenaroma. Eine verdammt einfallslose Rezeptur für ein Spezialrelease.

Bottle from Ales by Mail. Pours clear golden with a thin white head. Heavy butterscotch on the nose, light brown bread. Taste is more of the same. Buttery finish with a grim aftertaste of drains.

Bottle picked up at Wine Raks ABZ West End. It pours golden - amber with a medium white head. The aroma is earthy, brown bread, nutty, cereal, hay and light spice. The taste is crisp, dry, earthy bitterness, toasted nuts, leather, chewy malt, cereal, spice and lime zest with a drying finish. Medium body and average. Decent enough golden bitter. Works well with a whisky on the side.
