We named Amasa after Amasa Bushnell, the first farmer to officially grow hops in Sonoma County in 1858 along with his hop growing partner Otis Allen. Their original hopyard was in the Green Valley region of Sonoma County near the small town of Sebastopol. It soon became evident that between the climate, soil, and other factors hops could easily be farmed and thrive in Sonoma County.
Amasa is an extra dry domesticated wild ale brewed and bottled to be enjoyed now, or aged. Ringing in at just 4.5% ABV, Amasa is not only sessionable, but it still retains a lot of flavor. The use of Brettanomyces yeast in the bottle conditioning process lends a rustic characteristic to the beer. If aged, many of the unique yeast qualities in the beer will become even more evident.

Bottle from the Brewpub. Hazy golden with a white head. Aroma and taste of soap, brett, some grass and light hops. Kind of drinkable but a bit boring to be honest.

Bottle poured and split. Bottled on 07/14/2015. Cloudy golden yellow pour with a chunky foam head. Hops make a big presence in the aroma. Brett yeast as well in the aroma and flavor. Not much sour going on, though I didn’t expect it to be. Very flavorful. Semi dry, very cool finish. Nice beer. UPDATE: Enjoying 10 months later, and it’s the same bottle date. Maybe this gets better in time. Sure seems that way when comparing tasting notes. Lemon tart and brett aroma. Doesn’t have the hop impressions I noted before, though they are there. Brett quality seems to be up front here. Cool, gentle carb, gentle flavor that drinks too easy. Delicious.

510 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/14/2015. Moderate gusher upon opening, but not unmanageable. Pours slightly hazy bright golden yellow color with a 2-3 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lemon, pineapple, peach, pear, apple, white grape, hay, straw, grass, white pepper, light cracker/bread, light musty funk, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy/funky brett, earthy hops, and light pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, pineapple, peach, pear, apple, white grape, hay, straw, grass, white pepper, light cracker/bread, light musty funk, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Large amount of earthy/peppery yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, pineapple, peach, pear, apple, hay, straw, grass, white pepper, light musty funk, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and light pale malt flavors; with a crisp malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Extremely dry from carbonation and yeast spiciness after the finish. High carbonation and light bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, fairly prickly, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is an awesome Brett wild ale style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and light pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours clear golden, large off-white head, creamy and slow to dissipate, nice lacing. Aroma is hay, pepper, belgian yeast, a touch of Bretty funk. Flavor is fairly dry, not tart but a bit funky, light bitterness. A yeast dominated beer with notes of black pepper, field hay, dust and basement. Light body. Interesting, not great.

Bottle split in the hotel room in Tacoma, thanks to Ferris, 07/11/14. Lightly hazed pale golden with a big billowing white head. Nose is tangy citric peel, light soap, brett notes, spice, bitter apricot, tangerine. Taste comprises tangerine, citric peel, light brett, farmyard, earthy, straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a tarte citric wash. Decent enough sour but no game changer.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle dated 2013-12-20. Aroma has a light graininess with moderate phenolic notes, especially coriander, pink peppercorn and lemongrass. Moderate tropical fruit notes with light stone fruit. Medium light citrus notes. Pours a fairly clear, pale yellow gold with a huge, rocky, white head that steadily recedes leaving behind nice, moderate lacing. No legs. Flavor has a light acidity with light graininess. Moderate tropical fruit notes with lighter stone fruit and pear. Light citrus notes and moderate phenolics. Lots of coriander and pink peppercorn. A bit of a harsh, grassy and herbal finish with moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high to high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer. I feel like the Brett character is too phenolic and not fruity enough for my tastes. As it warms there is a bit more fruit and a bit less phenolics.
