We named Amasa after Amasa Bushnell, the first farmer to officially grow hops in Sonoma County in 1858 along with his hop growing partner Otis Allen. Their original hopyard was in the Green Valley region of Sonoma County near the small town of Sebastopol. It soon became evident that between the climate, soil, and other factors hops could easily be farmed and thrive in Sonoma County.

Amasa is an extra dry domesticated wild ale brewed and bottled to be enjoyed now, or aged. Ringing in at just 4.5% ABV, Amasa is not only sessionable, but it still retains a lot of flavor. The use of Brettanomyces yeast in the bottle conditioning process lends a rustic characteristic to the beer. If aged, many of the unique yeast qualities in the beer will become even more evident.

25cm of eggwhite-yellowish head over a thumb of faintly veiled, pale golden beer with Grünstich ; shards of lace. "WIld" yeast nose with an outspoken Brett character. There’s a just-not-fruity hoparoma clearly present as well, and somewhere a hint at Indochinese herbs and cocos. Bitterish-bretty-citruspeel. Moulded citruspeel too, but definitely not disturbingly. Finish has a bit of sparadrap and inevitable traces of floormop. Light body, very attenuated, carbonation all knocked out. Better than most of these wild tries. Many thanks to Vinnie, the RR crew, and of course, the Vermeersch emissionaries!!

Thank you Mathieu87 + PriorL for the effort! 500 ml. bottle sampled @ Samson en Geert Bierproef Avond. 071415 - possibly BBF date since that this should be a 4+ years old. Hazy citrus, little white head. Nose is huge esters, grass, soapy, zest, low Belgian esters. Taste is citrus, yeasty, lemon, Belgian esters, very green raw esters, grass, soapy. Strangely BE, low Duvel yeast & esters vibe, age doesn’t show that heavily. Body is esters, grass, yeast. Pretty decent Belgian Ale. Brett must have definitely helped it with the aging process, to be honest I am not really getting brett here.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul. Pours lightly hazed yellow with a frothy, white head. The nose has nice musty farm, lemon peel, light sweet flavour with good brett funk, some pale, grains, hay, white grape, melon, bitter rind. Light bodied with average carbonation. Nicely balanced finish, with more rindy bitterness, barnyard, bretty must. Lovely.

Bottle shared on level 42. It pours very pale gold with a thick, rugged white head. The aroma is earthy, musty, funk, brett, farmyard, white bread and hay. The taste is crisp, mellow bitterness, cracker, straw, grass, white bread, touch of lemon, barnyard, hay and white pepper with a dry finish. Light body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Crisp and rather drinkable stuff.

Bottled 7/14/15, drunk 3/15/17. Thanks Joenugs!
Shimmering golden-flax body has a slight hint of haziness leaving the sediment behind. White head is large and well-retained.
Clear, pure brett in the nose takes the very floral-perfumey approach. Very little of the band aid or sweaty/horsey funk of some brett strains. In that sense, it’s fairly unique. Lavender, lilac and just a light touch of powdered sugar that is mostly passing with breathing. Very light grains, biscuits and such from the malt with just a hint of fruity esters in the form of dry nectarine skin and appleskin. Low on the pepper phenols. Altogether it’s not as rounded and inviting as Orval, but it’s also much lower in abv, so the brett is more starkly apparent. Very aromatic, nonetheless, with no alcohol or flaws.
As to everyone in their mom who seems to only be able to say, "Duhhhh....it’s not very complex...." what complexity are you looking for? Yes, there isn’t as deep a funk as table Dorothy, nor quite the fun band-aid or guava-lime, but it’s got tons of floral and herbal qualities that just go in a different direction. Grain/malt character shows biscuits, dry, grainy cereal notes and a touch of honey. The texture is perfect, with just enough maltiness adding texture, but still leaving the beer dry. I will concede it comes off as borderline soapy at times, but that’s about the only detractor here. Very, very drinkable and like most low gravity brett beers like this, it needs a long time (20 minutes+) to breath in the glass and warm. It’s no redemption batch 1, but then, pretty much nothing is.
