Dark Malt and American hops unite to bring a new age of bitterness. Pithy grapefruit and resin combine with a dark chocolate and roasty coffee hit to deliver a resonating bitterness that goes beyond IBUs.

Can from Beers of Europe [170117]
Black, tan edges, frothy beige head
Aroma of piney hops, grapefuit zest, dark roast
Taste of roasted dark malts, bitter pine hops, some grapefruit zest, getting burnt toast, bitter coffee roast, no subtlety here
Palate - Soft carb, medium to full body, very bitter throughout, very bitter zest, too aggressive almost rough tbh. Finish is very dry, very bitter
Overall - Aggressive BIPA, I prefer some sweet dark malts in there. This is over rough, but still some good flavours in there

0.33 l can from Pivoteka, Zagreb. Shared with Višnja 666 and Nikola. Black, creamy off-white to tan head. Medium hopped, mint, herbal, toasty. Very nice balance, medium to high bitterness, some roasty flavors. Medium body, soft carbonation, alcohol hidden, hoppy finish. Very soft and nice for a DIBLA!

Can. Dark brown with a light tan head that fades to a cm but then is never less. Aroma is more tropical than citrus fruit and with briocheish chocolate it smells a little sickly. Some grapefruit and coffee are trying to hold it in check. And, since it turns out not to be that sweet, it all works: medium bodied and clean with the citrus cutting through fin and the tropical fruit being more lychee than guava. A little pine too at the firmly bitter finish. Good but not particularly distinctive. Is there enough going on for >7%?

330 ml can. Dark amber body, almost black with a big, dense beige head. Lovely aroma of fruit, roasted malt and lots of pine. Flavor is medium sweet, roasted dark malt, chocolate, citric fruit, grapefruit, pine and quite bitter. Full bodied and long lasting aftertaste. It’s a big and bold version of black IPA (Imperial BIPA?) but smooth and well balanced as well. Very nice.

Can from Pivoteka, shared with heavy. Extremely dark brown/red body with an off white head. Aroma... roasty, tropical, dank and herbal notes, light alcohol, dry maltiness too. Not bad. Taste... lighter than expected but damn pleasant, roasty maltiness mixing well with herbal/lime, slightly dank bitter hoppiness, nicely creamy and with notes of apricot too, light chocolate perhaps for a second. Good bitter/herbal and slightly roasty finish and aftertaste. Well executed Black IPA, very well executed indeed.

Zwart bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is bitter hoppig met een lichte rooksmaak en iets van bittere chocolade, zwarte thee en donkere koffie.

(Keg at BrewDog Helsinki, 20161130) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had pine, liquorice and fruitiness. Palate was medium bodied with rather high carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, pine, liquorice, sweetness, burnt malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy and bitter. A too messy brew even though the burnt malts weren’t too dominating.
