You know the deal with the name ‘Modern Times’? It was an experimental utopian community that lived a brief, brilliantly crazy life in the mid-19th Century. Totally by chance, our brewery is located in the San Diego neighborhood of Point Loma, which was founded as a Theosophical utopian community called “Lomaland” in 1900. So that’s a thing. This beer tastes like friendly, sophisticated sunshine. It’s a Belgian-style farmhouse ale.

Can @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours a generally clear yellow, white head. Aroma presents sweet saison yeast. Taste presents a smooth, sweet, fluffy saison character, lightly herbal. Perfectly fine, unexciting saison / Belgian blonde, if a little over-smooth.

Can @ benzai. Slightly hazy yellow with no real head. Smells floral, fresh, yeasty. Tastes floral, soapy, yeasy. Medium body, way too much carbo.

Nice pale yellow, white foam. Belgian yeast nose, spices, cloves and ginger. Taste has more of that yeast character, yet quite drinkable and has some fruitiness next to these spices. Grainy and malt base actually there but still doe snot interfere with drinkability. Good and simple, starting beer for a night.

16 oz can poured. This is the side of Modern Times I haven’t seen yet. Quite enjoyable for sure. Hazy darker golden pour with a ton of lasting foam head. Belgian aroma with a soft lemon tart. Supreme refreshment with this beer. Drinks so easy. Very pleasant. Soft spice, moderate wheat linger. Cool late. Really into this one. Would love to try the variations. Especially cucumber. Solid Belgian saison with a ton of flavor here.

Can. A- Fruity Belgian yeast, spices, subtle rubber. A- Yellow color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Floral, white pepper, spices, wheat. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, boring finish. O- This might just be Modern Times most mediocre beer. It was fine by all means but wasn’t outstanding like most others I’ve had from them. Pretty typical for what you would expect. Almost tasted more like a Belgian Wit than Saison though.

Canned (MT/KS/MB February tasting). Yellowish golden colour, small white head. Aroma is fruity, floral, mildly spicy with some yeasty and mild earthy notes as well. Flavour is bready, some citrus, nice yeastiness, some grass as well as mild earth. Good and refreshing. Hopefully someone would start importing this to Finland, this is close to a perfect summer beer.

Can from The Bottle Shop Bermondsey and drunk on a train. Interesting as I’ve recently had some saisons from bbno who probably brew the best saisons in London. Hazy pale gold colour lasting white head. Dry saisom yeast aroma. Not much funk or farmyard. I mean it has some but this is too clean to be great. I mean its good really competent in the lemon and drying lemon lemon balm finish. It just a bit too clean and clinical. Some tropical fruit. As a hoppy siason it is very good and drinkable. I just want a bit more body and funkiness i suppose. Good though.
