Our Pineapple Sculpin IPA came from one of many small-batch cask experiments to enhance the flavor of our signature IPA. With so many tropical hop notes in Sculpin, how could we not try adding some sweet, juicy pineapple? The combination of fruity flavors and hop intensity definitely packs a punch.

12 oz bottle from an overpriced six pack bought at Heritage Meats. Aroma is candied pineapple, orange circus peanuts. Pours clear golden with a medium off-white head that falls after a minute, leaving a little lace. Taste is highly bitter with flavors of real pineapple. Interesting and tasty, but I like the grapefruit and habanero versions better. These fruit additions to these classic beers are both interesting and slightly annoying, given that they’re appearing right after their sale to Constellation. I honestly look forward to each of these offshoots that are coming out, even if a part of me is ashamed to admit it, because it’s almost like the wine-coolerization of craft beer. What to make of it? We’ll see if this is a fad or harbinger. I’ll probably keep buying them as long as the base beer stays solid, which it does appear to be as of right now.

Growler from Shrewsbury Liquors. Bright brassy gold color topped by a large frothy white head with big clinging lace. Aroma is a balance of spicy hops and tropical fruit, most noticeably pineapple. First sip is sweet pineapple, mango and tangerine. There is an underlying floral hoppiness that hits you as well. The pineapple fades as the brew warms. The peppery bitter hops come to the front. Overall, a very nice IPA that offers a complex range of flavors.

12oz bottle pours a clear orange with some frothy, white head. Nose is juicy, pineapple, orange creamcicle, mild hand soap. Flavor is sweet with oranges and tangerine, creamcicle, some soda, some pineapple. Finishes sweet and a little creamy.

Bottle from Stone in Asagaya. Pours a crystal clear, glowing orange with a finger of foam that lingers. Huge pineapple nose with some grapefruit, grass and light pine notes. Prickly carbonation on the palate with a light body that hides the abv very well. Bitter on the palate with a nice hint of pineapple on the finish. Lingering bitterness and pineapple juice. Really well done and a fun take on a great San Diego IPA. Original is still the best but this is a well-done fruit IPA. --- Beer merged from original tick of Pineapple Sculpin on 19 Mar 2016 at 22:08 - Score: 8

Bottle: Bright golden pour with a sturdy inch of white head, light lacing. Hoppy aroma with tropical fruity hops. Sweet pineapple is detectable, but probably only because I’m looking for it... similar in the taste; a tropical fruit hop medley of sweet and moderate bitters, complete with a tangy pineapple note. Very nice. At this point I have not had a Sculpin or variant that hasn’t been great.

Pours a clear amber from a bottle, thin white head with little lacing. Tropical fruit aroma, pineapple-y flavor I guess, along with the big tropical hop notes. Good beer, kind of over-hyped.

Bottle from City Beer, thanks SirLimpsalot. Hazy light amber with a white head. Fresh and hoppy with pineapple and mango. Also notes of malt. Medium bitter and with a dry finish. Quite tasty.
