Can from Bradleys, Cork [170416] Rate #2700
Pitch black, thin tan head, some lacing
Aroma of dense dark malts, getting an unusual fruit note, leather, dark chocolate, soft vinous, no smoke
Taste of dense dark malts, smoke is there but not overdone, soft coffee roast, leather, light tar, soft charred woody, bitter dark chocolate, slight vegetal note, complex
Palate - Soft carb, full body, fairly sweet, very rich, booze very well hidden for 11%. Finish as main flavour, dense dark malts, soft smoke
Overall - Very good but not outstanding

Can at Bierboom. Thick, dense, creamy, pale greyish beige head, blackish robe but still with translucent burgundy brown edges. Powerful aroma of cured meat, ’natural’ iron, bitter chocolate, nut shells, wet leather, stewed beef, cappuccino, liquorish, pipe tobacco, chestnut, soy sauce, caramel. Soft candied sweetness in the onset (fig, raisin) but more strongly so, a powerful, beefy umami flavor; soft carbo, fatty and thick, bit resinous body, caramelly and nutty malts becoming softly roasted bitter in the end, very filling, with some coffeeish flavors at the back paired with peppery hops, retronasal liquorish and chocolate aromas and a heavy but not astringent glow of bourbon-like alcohol. Lovely in all respects, very rich and satisfactory.

Can at and thanks to James, 26/03/16. Black topped with a decent tan covering that retains well as a swirl. Nose is sweet malt, light spice, dark fruit esters, light cocoa powder, hint of booze, molasses, trace of smoke. Taste comprises toffee fudge, rum and raisen notes, light spice, charred wood, cocoa rub, caramelised brown sugars. Full bodied, fine carbonation, light warming booze in the close. Decent enough impy but not top draw.

Can. Mother Kelly’s Bottle Shop. Not far off black. Film and ring of sticky, lasting, tan head. Nose has wood smoke. Charred wood. Wet leather. Some cake fruits. Some dark chocolate. Some savoury, fishy smoke, too. Taste is smoky, chewy sweet. Has some burnt bitterness. Smooth, full body. Rich, but not heavy. Finishes long, chewy, sweet and smoky bitter. Hugely tasty, and rich, but too smoky for my delicate palate!

Can at home in London - picked up at Clapton Craft, Hackney. Pours oily black with a frothy, brown head. Moderate dark, smoked malts in the aroma, some chocolate, dark fruits, roast. Heavy sweet flavour with ample gooey chocolate, robust smokiness, cured ham, raisins, licorice, figs. Full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming on the finish, sticky sweet, with impressively minimal alcohol presence, further rich roasted malts, strong and lasting smoked, malts, sugary chocolate, lots of liquefied dark fruits, brownies. There’s a bit of burnt wood and scorched earth bitterness coming through in the aftertaste. Great stuff, good depth of flavour. Perhaps a touch sweet, but overall it’s very drinkable, especially given the strength.
