Choulette Ambrée is the result of a rigorous selection of special aromatic malts which give it a good caramel taste. Red, with coppery reflections, dense ivory foam, this beer exudes an aroma rich in notes of prune.

330ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Oct 16. Brought by Jeremy. Many thanks! One of those beers I assumed I had rated before, but havent. Pours a hazed amber, off-white head. Aroma is ripe dark berries, malts. Taste bears a curious sweetness alongside the soft caramel malts that I think I missed last time. This I think makes it a little too sweet and imbalanced for me.

0.33 l bottle from ’Saveur Bière’, best before june 2017. Clear, amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan to white head. Faint, sweetish-malty, minimally fruity aroma of caramel, nuts, rock candy, overripe banana and some raisins. Sweetish-malty, minimally fruity taste of caramel, nuts, rock candy and some raisins, followed by a short, slightly bitter, yeasty and slightly warming finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Decent, not very special.

330ml bottle. Clear, dark amber colour with average, thick, fairly lasting and lacing, white head. Fruity aroma delivers a plethora of red and blue berry notes, additional notes of sweet and sour cherries as well as a touch of plum. Taste is moderately sweet, slightly sugary, fruity, notes of cherry, hints of plum, all with a minimally artificial jelly bear touch; leafy overtones in the finish. Unsatisfying discrepancy between aroma and taste.

Thank you Mathieu87 & PriorL! 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Mathieu’s house cooling party”. BBF 03.03.2015. GUSHER. Dark amber with no head. Nose is spoiled bread & massive oxidation, stale bread & big wet cardboard, raisin,… Taste is hugely oxidized, old cardboard, wet cardboard, raisin, sugar, old butterscotch candy, touch watery, toffee,… Body is guar, stale bread & cardboard. Wet cardboard & other oxidation notes are excessive, totally dominating. Not liking it, this one didn’t keep unfortunately despite the style.

Classic bière de garde from Valenciennes, with pale beige, mousse-like, perfectly regular, sticky head and deep, warm amber colour with pinkish hue, lively sparkling with tiny yeast particles floating everywhere. Aroma of walnuts, caramel, apple peel, nutmeg, earth, dried leaves, aniseed, cherry liqueur, sherry. Sweet fruity taste, hint of apple cider, strong carbonation, rounded and smooth mouthfeel, caramelly and nutty malts, spicy yeast, leafy and earthy hop bitterishness in the end where some of the initial sweetness also remains, some warming alcohol too. Excellent example of its style and one of the best French beers I’ve had so far.
