Originally brewed to mark the Queen's Coronation in 1953, this prize winning golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. Regular drinkers simply asked for a 'Lizzie'.

Keg at Waterloo Tap. It pours clear copper withba thick beige head. The aroma is sweet, bready, sticky, toffee, fruit cake, rich, unctuous, toasted brown sugar, spice and candied peel. The taste is dry, bitter, slick oily, wood, varnish, toffee, honeycake, fruit cake, brown bread, spice, raisin, sultana, earthy, chewy, old leather sofa, brett, date, kick of booze on the back-end with a drying finish. Medium - full body and fine, foamy carbonation. Rich, flavoursome, Good depth and balanced. Colour me impressed.

Takeaway bottle from Royal Oak, Borough. Musky fruit aroma. Stewed fruits, honey and booze. A ruby tinged amber. No head. Medium bitter. The booze hits and then takes control. Light bodied. Watery although it does leave a slick mouthfeel. Long but low key finish. Provided that warming sensation that I appreciate in a barley wine, but in terms of taste and palate is somewhat one dimensional.

Bottle from the brewery. A sweet & bitter taste combining to make a perfectly drinkable beer despite the high abv. Very flat and slightly characterless however. --- Beer merged from original tick of Elizabethan Ale - Sparkling Barley Wine on 23 Jun 2024 at 18:53 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. Original review text: Bottle from parents for Christmas. My 3000th rating and what a special brew to mark it with. Brown ale / bitter nose. Caramel gold /Mahogany with lively carbonation. Lovely sweet dried fruit and nutty flavour with sweet clean ending and no roughness. As smooth as Queen Lizzy herself's reign.

Bottle thanks to James, 30/12/15. Clear golden orange with a decent beige swirl. Nose is rich fruit cake, candied fruit peel, brown sugar, caramel. Taste comprises fruit loaf, dates, prunes, caramel fudge, light spice. Full bodied fine carbonation, light warming booze in the close. Decent barley wine. --- Beer merged from original tick of Elizabethan Ale 1952-2012 on 24 Oct 2012 at 13:25 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7.5. Original review text: Bottle at home (from Harveys online) - 23/10/12. 7.5% ABV also has 1952 - 2012 on the badge to commemorate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Pours a clear dark chestnut brown with a thin off white head that soon clears to the edges. Nose comprises treacle toffee, fudge, prunes, dates and burnt sugars. Tastes of dark dried fruits, figs, prunes, toffee, caramelised sugars, treacle and a little alcohol although this is well disguised. Medium bodied with fine carbonation leading to a sweet and fruity finish, An enjoyable barley wine!

(Thx!) 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “2de Bierproeffestival van De Dijleschuimers”. Clear dark orange, little white. Nose is odd fish guts yeast, dull sugar (odd fermentation temperature?),… Taste is rather German like given oily nature, heavy fish guts, yeast notes, basic oily sugary sweetness, caramel, orange, tad marmalade,… Oily, slick fish guts body. Reminiscent of the “De Molen / Hair of the Dog Fred”, serious disappointment much like that beer, zero complexity, fish guts, mild esters, thinned oily base sweetness,… I was really hoping for more and as usual I question its historical accuracy.

Bottle from Harvey’s online shop. Appearance - orange with a thin head. Nose - initial hit of bird droppings and cardboard. Eventually some orange comes through. Taste - total marmalade. Palate - medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long tangy finish. Overall - the nose is awful. The rest is a lot better.
