Originally brewed to mark the Queen's Coronation in 1953, this prize winning golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. Regular drinkers simply asked for a 'Lizzie'.

Bottle form Harveys brewery shop, Lewes, East Sussex. A dark golden/amber coloured pour with virtually no head to speak of. Sweet, fruity, caramel aroma. Tastes quite sweet, fruity, caramel, rich, slightly musty and boozy. Been meaning to try this one for years. A nice old English barley wine.

--> Tolles Bier!! 12,14,12,13,12,14 - 13,25 --- Beer merged from original tick of Elizabethan Ale 1952-2012 on 09 Jan 2016 at 06:32 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 9 | Flavor - 9 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. Original review text: 275ml, May 13 BHJ on the purple crown-top. Malty nose with plums. The beer starts intense malty. Dried fruit (black cherries, plums, blue grapes). The body is quite light and easy to drink, but full and deep intense. Smooth caramel, not too much sweetness, not much bitterness. Easy to drink with a very long aftertaste of roasted caramel and dried fruits. Great!

A- slowly forming head of foam after the pour, at its max less than an inch and that fades quickly.

S- caramel malt, Port like nose, slight dark fruits.

T- caramel malt with again, Port like flavour, some butterscotch, hints of dark fruits.

M- medium to medium high body, no carbonation.

O- very tasty brew with the alcohol well hidden. I dig it.

GBBF Day 1. 1952 - 1977 Version. Cheers to Dan for cracking this one open. Clear deep amber beer, no head. Sherry, caramel and wood on the nose. Palate is light and semi dry and still has some modest carbonation. Rich caramel malts. Lovely toffee and sherry. Rich tangy fruits and some orange peel. Even a little berry fruits. Light finish. Cracking beer, has aged superbly over 39 years!

500 ml bottle, 2002 vintage sampled in 2007. Dark brown body with a medium sized beige head. Not particular strong but nice aroma of malt, caramel, cherries and vinous alcohol. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, fruit, acidic berries and vinous. Quite complex. Fine body and pleasant aftertaste.

Bottle at home. It pours clear red-Brown with pretty much no head. The nose is toffee, fruit cake, tinned fruit, over-ripe pineapple, cherry, spice and wood. The taste is toffee, maple syrup, fruit cake, wood, vanilla, leather, spice, wood polish, raisin and some alcohol warmth with a smooth, sweet finish. Medium-full body, low carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Balance is spot on. Dangerously drinkable. --- Beer merged from original tick of Elizabethan Ale - Sparkling Barley Wine on 23 Jun 2023 at 12:30 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. Original review text: 750ml bottle direct from the brewery. It pours clear amber - brown with a thick, fluffy white head. The aroma is woody, nutty, sappy, resinous, brown bread, cereal, toffee, lovely white wine / champagne character, gooseberry, melon, touch of fizzy candy and wood. The taste is dry upfront, bitter - sweet, nutty, woody, earth, toffee/caramel, brett, vinous, white wine, gooseberry, melon, light acidity, musty, some funk, lingering spice, slight metallic twang, orange marmalade, brown bread and leafiness with a slick, vinous finish which eventually dries out. Medium body and moderate - high fluffy carbonation. Incredible depth of flavour. Champagne character is fairly substantial. Is it balanced? Probably not, but it's very fun to drink. --- Beer merged from original tick of Elizabethan Ale 1952-2012 on 08 Sep 2016 at 04:43 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 8.
