Next to Hendrik Geeraert, already honoured by Deca for flooding the Yser valley in the First World War in order to stop the Germans' advance, Karel Cogge was involved as well, and has now also received his own Deca tribute. Bottle from Dranken De Moor in Haasdonk. Some very light gushing during opening, but manageable if given enough time to rest. Very thick and frothy, mousy, 'mucky', beaten egg-white, membrane-lacing, stable head over an immediately hazy, deeply and very 'warmly' vermillion-hued brownish-looking but actually copper-coloured beer, with a suspension of darker, minute yeast bits throughout; turns murky and deeper bronze-brown with sediment. Aroma of hard caramel candy, old gingerbread, chewing gum, red apple, dark green tree leaves, nutmeg, moldy walnuts, banana, pear, brown soap and indeed coriander seed, dry tea bags, mud. Fruity onset, estery with notes of banana, apple and pear, bubblegummy effect, but restrained in sweetness; lively but not overly harsh carbonation, acceptable for a dubbel. Smooth-edged, bit resinous mouthfeel, notably soapy; hard-caramelly malt body with soft brown-bready and 'drier' nutty sides, even lightly toasted bitterish in the end, where this subtle bitterness mingles with an earthy, leafy hop bitterness. Phenolic clove effects and bready-earthy yeastiness with a faint dash of protein flavour to it make for a notably earthy, bit 'dirty' ending, with lingering coriander seed soapiness (strongly so) and hop bitterness alongside ongoing esters. Bit rough on the edges, too soapy and coriandered for me, but still a decent, well-hopped and not 'cliché sweet' dubbel, works fine as far as I'm concerned, just like its blonde counterpart Hendrik Geeraert.

Bottle from Deca, Woesten, Flanders, Monday 10th April 2017 at home on a non drinking night (rules are to be broken) Dark brown with a light tan head, some sweet dark muscovado but more likely candy sugar comes through. Light spice and a little dab of vanilla, it’s quite nice. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

Bottle from Deca and drunk at home. Clear very dark brown ruby colour. Lasting beige head. Figs and prune aroma. Decent malty beer. Not many esters. A little yeasty I guess. Sweetish in the mouth. Some ok malts. A little hoppy on the finish. Yes quite good with some decent malty fruit. Decent I thought.

Bottle @ home. Lightly unclear amber color, average to medium sized off-white to beige head. Smell and taste lightly malts, tart, fruitpeel tart, light bitter finish. Bleh really don’t like it, not my thing at all. Decent body, a bit fizzy carbonation.
