After the Hof ten Dormaal brewery suffered a devastating fire, many befriended breweries came to the rescue by making tributes for them or collaboration brews with them, and this one is apparently a collab with Leite. Bottle from Dranken De Moor in Haasdonk near Beveren. A mean hissing sound upon lifting the crown cap for about a millimetre proved an ominous sign: very violent gusher, with beer streaming out of the bottle neck and no way to stop it - I must have lost about 1/3 of it to the sink. Medium thick, tightly ’membranous’ lacing, off-white, moussy head, slowly showing gaps in the middle here and there, over a hazy, deep amber-tinged peach blonde beer. Aroma initially very heavily dominated by DMTS (the foul, sulfuric smell of burnt rubber - hence the ’fiery’ character of the beer, perhaps?), but fading away after a while, unveiling more ’normal’ impressions of peach, soggy bread, damp straw, baking powder, coriander seed, banana and even bubblegum, cooked potato, raw carrots, honey, caramel, field flowers. Notably sweet onset, canned peaches, bubblegummy banana ester and overripe pear, with a lot of residual ’white’ sugars lending the whole a honeyish effect; deeper, ’dull’ sourish undercurrent, sharpish carbonation, ’full’ and lean, slick mouthfeel. Smooth caramelly and bready maltiness with a thin metallic edge to it, suffering from overcarbonation way beyond its middle phase, with a lot of fruity esters and spicy phenols overseeing the whole - in an overly obtrusive manner. Leads to a slightly more dryish, earthy finish, with a dash of floral, mildly spicy, bit rooty hops providing only basic ’end bitterness’; the malt, ester and (especially) residual sugar sweetness dominate. Earthy, bready yeasty flavours too, as well as a slight hint at warming, ’jenever’-ish alcohol, but that element fortunately stays manageable. A fire-breathing dragon of a beer in a sense: ugly, rather grotesque and initially smelling of sulfur. Uninspired sweet Belgian ’ambrée’ kind of ale, way too sweet, overcarbonated, too estery and too alcoholic for even a 7% Belgian, a tad dirty and, most of all, a very agressive gusher - this thing only confirms my opinion that Hof ten Dormaal is among the most overrated breweries in this country, with all due respect for what the Janssens family has embarked upon and for De Leite’s noble intentions with this product. Not impressed at all - if only this contained more Leite and less Dormaal.

Mediocre.
