Stupid sized tan head - BE AWARE (my experience obviously wasn’t the only one) with a chunky brown coloured body. Aroma of metal, raisins, nuts, cardboard and a bit of musty vanilla. Super carbonated mouthful of roasted malt, nuts, honey, caramel and some good oak. Aftertaste still has some carbonation, with a bunch of alcohol and a vanilla flavour that lasts. Overall, a bit too one-sided and mild for the style. Way too much head and over-bottle conditioned! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 14-January-2008.

One dimensional sour apple, earty nose. Virtually no-carbonation with coffee, chocolate mouth. Malty chocolate finish with a low amount of bitterness.

Poured deep red-brown with a medium tan head. Caramel and toffee aroma- very toasty. Flavor is also quite toasty and rather dry, with caramel notes, finishing with a rather piney bitterness that is a bit stronger than "moderate." Feels like it wants to develop dark fruit character but doesn’t quite make it (don’t you love beers with initiative?). Medium-bodied and not too complex but good nonetheless.

Had this following a Maitresse du Moine. 2004 bottle. Pours a coppery-red/orange, looks like a deep IPA. Smells bitter yet juicy, plenty of floral hops. My 3rd or 4th Old ale, and none have been remotely alike. This one was almost like a double IPA, though not as much caramel malt. The hops variety they used was particularly enjoyable, had a real earthy/mossy appeal, with a fuzzy texture. Lots of alcohol, not terribly complex, but fairly balanced, though somewhat on the drier/bitter side. Pretty good stuff I thought.
