Indigenous to northern Europe, Baltic Porters historically stem from the shipping of British porters to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic Porters are often brewed with lager yeast, which is the tradition we follow. Big & bold, with flavors of coffee, dark fruit & raisins, this black beer is smooth as a chocolate swirl.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with small medium brown highlight with small beige head that dissapates quickly. Little lacing, medium body, low carbonation, creamy texture, and light roasted malt aroma. Taste is roasted malt, dark fruit, burnt coffee, and bitter hop finish. Alcohol is pretty well covered, pretty good.

Oct 2009: This one pint and six fluid ounce bottle was given to me by Bierman9 (an American BA) in Munich and consummed in my hotel room for breakfast in Nurnberg the next day! First of all an apology to David, it was drank out of a plastic beaker! What a fantastic breakfast beer, who needs a coffee and brown toast after one of these? As mentioned above the beer was poured (about five times) into my plastic toothbrush holder cup and each time it looked great. A dark, deep brown liquid with a dirty creamy head stared straight back at me each time I filled the cup. My nose detected rich burnt coffee beans, dark chocolate and an Irish Peat Bog in the aroma, a fine mix at nine in the morning. The taste did justice to the aroma I had been sniffing. Add a slighty smoked Austrian Cheese to the smell mixture. This, along with all the aforementioned robust flavours gave me a wonderful tasting Porter to start the day off with. I owe David a big one!

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 02/09/2012. Pours black with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Roasted malt and vanilla coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a roasty character and flavors of malt, coffee, vanilla and a bit of dark fruit. The finish is roasted coffee with a hint of hops in the aftertaste. Good all around.

22 oz. bottle, split 4 ways, pours black with a small tan ring of head. Aroma of vanilla, molasses and chocolate malt. Flavour of vanilla, light roast and molasses. Silky smooth palate, but lacking a bit in complexity. Very good.

2010 vintage. Aged over 1 year. 22oz Bomber into a snifter. Pours a solid black with a thin mocha head that didn’t last but had good lace with what was there. Strong aroma, smoke, coffee, almonds, heavy roasted malt. Flavor is tons of chocolate, coffee, roastiness, and a very subtle underlying bitterness. Rich and creamy mouthfeel. Great porter. I wish I had put more than 1 bottle in the cellar! Desire to drink more is high. But look out for that ABV, it can hit you fast. You will NOT go wrong with this one.

Opaque black beer. Chocolate coloured frothy head. Soft palate. Creamy dark malt, a hint of chocolate and a subtle note of dark fruit - cherry and plum. An aniseed cherry finish with an overriding creamy malt. Surely an imperial porter?

Review from notes, sampled 1/26/2008 2008 vintage 22oz Bomber into a Sam Adams glass. Pours a solid black with a thin mocha head that doesn’t stick around long, but does leave some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet almost a lactose sweet smell with some roasted grain, coffee and some faint raisin in there too. The taste hits you with a lot at once. First I got some hops then chocolate then coffee then some alcohol. Roasty bitterness in the end sits in your gullet just begging you to take another sip. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. This is an excellent brew! I better buy up some more before they are all gone. Great cellar candidate too. Another excellent brew from Smuttynose.
