With Robert The Great we refer to Lord of Liddesdale, Robert I, popularly known as Robert the Bruce, was king of Scotland from 1306 until his death in 1329. Robert I was one of the most famous warriors of his generation, eventually leading Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. He fought successfully during his reign to regain Scotland’s place as an independent country and today is revered in Scotland as a national hero. This naughty one does what Robert once did, conquering a place of independence in the wild jungle of globalization.

Bottle. Very dark brown, smaller beige head, not too lasting. Nice chocolate nose with some roasted tones and quite some woodiness in the back. Some berries and a bit of alcohol as well. Medium sweetness, quite roasted, slight yeast. Medium bitterness. Lasting yeasty aftertaste. Medium body. Nice.

Bottle from The Beer Cave. Black body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of Worcestershire sauce, wood, chocolate and liquorice. Flavour of black pepper and blackcurrant. Medium to full body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Strong and tangy. Loved this.

Mine is a 33 cl bottle of Robert The Great acquired from Belgian Happiness back in the spring. Cool weather upon us now, quite cool and wet today, it is a good time to sample an imperial stout. I pull out a snifter from a Houston brewery, open the bottle and pour. Dark brown working its way to black in color and a very thin rim of tan foam. Carbonation is working its way up steadily. I like the nose, semisweet chocolate, licorice and malt. I lift for a drink, yes, this is really decent. Dark chocolate, roasty malt, some woodiness, black licorice and a hint of cane syrup. Light with the sweetness and stiff with the bitterness. Better than my anticipation.

On tap at Tripel B Belgian Beer Café in Worcester, Thursday 7th October 2021 in the company of Mum and Keith. Pours black with a slim creamy head. Fruity and tangy, roasty and impressive bitterness for the style, lots of hedgerow bramble type fruits. Chocolate does of course show and the abv is noted, however it's actually easy drinking for the abv. Good but glad that I was restrained enough to settle for a 1/3rd

Good strong round beer. Dry and sharp, well balanced and bold. Not extraordinary, but it is quite good. Has a little belgian phenolic contribution. Sterk ams

33 cl. bottle shared with Suus @ Alex and Suus.
Black with a beige head. Malty dark caramel aroma with dried fruits and chocolate. No real roastiness. Sweet taste with a medium bitter and sweet finish. Smooth and very Belgian.

Bottle from House of Trembling Madness. It pours darkest brown to black with a tan cap. The aroma is toasty, earthy roast, freshly roasted coffee, dark chocolate, nutty, praline, ashy, charred, rocky road, dried fruits and jammy wagon. The taste is dry, bitter, rich roasted malt, slightly charred, burnt toast, umami, coffee beans, some blueberry muffin, blackberry, varnish cacao nibs, peppery spice, tar and just a touch of alcohol. Medium+ body and. Average carbonation. It's ok, but seems to be lacking something. Really doesn't have a lot of depth to it. Not bad, I just expect a bit noe from a De Struise dark beer.
