The Class of ’88 Barley Wine was based on the guidelines published in renowned beer connoisseur Fred Eckhardt’s The Essentials of Beer Style, which was originally published in 1988. Each of the three breweries working on the project brewed their own interpretation of that original recipe. The three resulting barley wines have a common heritage and ingredients, and brewers from Deschutes Brewery, North Coast Brewing Company and Rogue Ales teamed up at each respective location to brew the beer(s).

“Working collaboratively to create this barley wine has been an adventure for all of us,” said Cam O’Connor, brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery. He spent time at both Rogue and North Coast as they brewed their versions of the beer together. “Sharing ideas and partnering to celebrate this landmark date in our shared histories promises to result in some extraordinary beer. The best part of the process, for me, was the camaraderie experienced spending time at each other’s facilities.”

Orange body with white head. Hoppier than I expected for a barley wine. Citrus beginning for the taste and a malt finish. No alcohol burn. Rather pleasant

Bouteille 75cl @ RBBSG III, courtesy of Ibrew2or3.

655 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBSG III. Thanks to Sebletitje! Light amber with a tanned head. Nose is very hoppy, lots of bitter pine resin, herbal caramel, candy sugar, bitter pineapple. Taste is likewise very bitter pine resin hops upfront, touch bark, floral, bitter yeast followed by caramel & candy sugar. Bitter & raw, almost like a super-malty DIPA. Body is oddly a touch light for the style. I am not the biggest fan of hoppy barley wines but this is pretty nice.

Sampled @ RBBSG III. Clear orange golden color, medium sized beige head. Aroma is malts, hops, lightly alcohol. Taste malts, hops, alcohol, bitter. Maybe not really the classic barley wine features but I really love it. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Nice!

Bomber - label states 11.5% - turbid glowing orange - pour seems thick, kindof viscous - nose is sweet and citric (smelling kind of like orange marmalade), with some bright acidity cutting through, earthy whiskey-ish notes, slight peppery/spicy character - low carbonation - soft in the mouth - quite sweet, with a lot of candied citrus character - however, there is a nice complex earthiness to it that cuts the sweetness, as does a strong warming sensation on the tail end - the warmth is clearly from alcohol, but it is not burning nor abrasive and does not make the beer boozy - some hop bitterness on the tail end - solid American barleywine.

From a74 cl bottle shared at Ryan’s. Pours a clear copper with a thick off white head. Malty nose. Flavors of caramel and toffee with some melon notes. Somewhat thin mouthfeel for a barley wine.
